Nettie Cook-Dove Obituary

COOK-DOVE, DR. NETTIE E., a native of Fernandina Beach, FL, was born on Mary 24, 1923 and went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 23, 2008. She is survived by three children, Ingrid Dove of Atlanta, GA, Beverly Dove-Ross of Richmond, VA and Joshua Kenneth Dove III of Miami; a sister, Laura L. Cook, a brother, Rychard S. Cook, II both of Miami; four grandchildren, Joy Nicole Ross, Joshua K. Dove IV, Raymond and Rayshawn Williams, seven great- grandchildren and a host of other relatives, surrogate daughters and dear friends. Dr. Dove was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Joshua K. Dove II in 1998. A graduate of Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Dove received her Ph.D. from Union Institute, Cincinnati, OH. She was employed as a science teacher in the Dade County Public School System in May High School in Goulds, FL. Dr. Dove retired as a secondary school administrator at South Dade High School in 1985. Dr. Dove was very active in her parish, Christ the King, Catholic Church in Richmond Heights, FL, where she pioneered the ORITA Ceremony, a rite of passage for young black men into Christian adulthood, and served as: President of the Council of Catholic Women, Lector and Commentator, chair of the Black Heritage Committee, and was a member of the Synod Preparation Commission on Christian Services, where she was appointed by the Archbishop of Miami. Dr. Dove was initiated into the glorious sisterhood of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at Beta Alpha Chapter at FAMU, and celebrated 64 years as a member. She served two consecutive terms as President of the Miami Alumnae Chapter. Dr. Dove was in the process of writing a book, "Peck High: You've Made Our Dreams Come True" reflecting memories of students and faculty from her beloved high school alma mater in Fernandina Beach, FL, where she also taught early in her career. Her children have committed to complete her last "project" on her behalf. Despite her many civic activities, Dr. Dove was totally committed to the love and care of her beloved sister, Laura Lee, who will miss Nettie greatly. A Memorial Service will be sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., at Second Baptist Church, 11111 Pinkston Dr., Richmond Heights, FL 33176, on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 7:00 PM, followed by a public viewing. Funeral Services will be held at St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church, 12125 SW 107 Avenue, Miami, FL 33176, 305-255-6642 on Friday, October 31, 2008 at 10 AM, followed by interment at Woodlawn Park South.
