Noble Cook Obituary

Noble David Cook

April 8, 2024

Miami, Florida - Noble David Cook, Emeritus Professor of History at Florida International University, passed away on April 8, surrounded by his wife and co-author, Alexandra (Sasha) Parma Cook, and daughter, Prof. Karoline (Kaja) Cook. He is also survived by son Vincent (Vinny) Cook and predeceased by son Greg. Born in 1941, he received a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972. After a period as an endowed professor at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut, he joined FIU in 1992, carrying a global reputation as the stunningly prolific author of multiple publications on diverse topics, including disease and population, Indigenous society, Christianization, and family intrigue in the Spanish Atlantic, especially Peru. He continued writing critically important books and articles throughout his time at FIU and even after he achieved Emeritus status in 2017, with his most recent book being released in 2023. He cultivated close relationships with scholars in his beloved city of Sevilla and in Peru, bringing top students from there to earn their Ph.D. here in Miami. A warm and generous human being, a dedicated teacher, and a true citizen-leader, he twice served as department chair of History. He leaves an enduring legacy for his family, friends, colleagues, students, and future generations of historians. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Cook Scholarship at FIU: https://ignite.fiu.edu/give-now/giving-opportunities/schools-and-colleges/steven-j-green-school-of-international-and-public-affairs/cook-scholarship-fund-for-research-on-the-colonial-iberian-atlantic-world/donation-form-credit-card/index.html
