Patrick Smith Obituary

SMITH, PATRICK F. 77, passed away Monday, February 5th, in Landrum, South Carolina. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of Fred G. and Marguerite Harlan Smith. Pat was the owner of a State Farm Insurance agency in Miami for over forty years, and became a resident of South Carolina in 2012. A star athlete at Coral Gables High School, he attended the University of Georgia on a football and baseball scholarship, and received the University of Georgia's Post Graduate Achievement Award Hall of Fame in 2009. A devoted alumnus and Vice President of the Boys and Girls Club of Miami, he tirelessly volunteered together with Judge Seymour Gelber and Cliff Perlman, coached for more than a decade, and developed and supported the after-school and Christmas Tree lot programs with then State Attorney Janet Reno. Pat received their Alumnus of the Year award in 1992 for his commitment to young people. An elder in the Granada Presbyterian Church in Coral Gables, he was a generous donor to numerous charities in the community. He is survived by his beloved wife of forty years, Josefina (Fifi) Pelleya; sons Scott Allan Smith, Brian Monroe Smith and Michael Smith; his stepson Bill Pelleya (Michaelann), and his sister, Sharyn Lynn Smith; five beautiful grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. In his memory, donations can be made to the Granada Presbyterian Church, the Edna C. Shalala Fund for Women's Athletics at the University of Miami, and the Boys and Girls Club of Miami.

My Beloved, you have no idea how much I miss you; you had no clue what separation after almost 45 years of togetherness means. You now are at home with our Beloved; I move forward. Everyday I think of you; everywhere I go I am reminded of the times we were so often there together Happiness is when I think of the "bliss" that you are experiencing now. Ask the Lord how to pray for the boys. I do so regularly if not many times a day. They need Him more than I thought. I move forward in the Lord; there is a reason why I am here. Yours, F.

Hi Fifi,

I am sad to head about Pat's passing. He is a good man. I am not sure if you remember me, but I worked with Mike quite a bit at the Vanguard School.

When you have the opportunity, can you email me at [email protected]? I would like to connect with Mike and see how he is doing.

Thank you,

Philip

I was saddened to read the death notice on Patrick Smith in the February 18 edition of The Miami Herald. His family and those who loved him are in my thoughts and prayers. Pat was a year behind me at the Southwest Boys' Club and at Coral Gables High. We had a lot in common besides the Club and Gables High. I drove by his Bird Road State Farm office often. Several times a year I would drop by unannounced. If he was in the office we would review some wonderful memories. I lost track of Pat when he moved to SC. SC is my home state, my family settled in SC during the Revolutionary War. Rowesville, SC is my home town, about 2 hours south of Landrum. Pat was a good man and a good friend. His soul has departed this life and begun a second life that is joyful and eternal. St. Mark chapter 4, verse 2: "In my Father's house are many mansions, if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." RIP old friend. John David Dannelly, Jr. Miami FL

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Pat (Mr. Smith to me). As a friend of his sons growing up, I knew the man for over 40 years. I had the privilege of spending some time with him in the 90s after I moved back to Miami after college. I enjoyed watching football and the World Series in his home, and going out to eat with him and his son Scott.

I have vivid childhood memories of him driving around our neighborhood in his silver Jaguar telling his boys that it was "time to come home for dinner." Always admired that Georgia Bulldog passion he had, even though I became a Florida Gator.

Rest in Peace Mr. Smith. We will miss you and your kind heart.

Dear Fifi and Family,

Our hearts are sad to hear of Pat's passing. He was a very special man and he will be missed. Ginger our golden retriever loved him. Anytime Pat opened the garage or stepped out the front door Ginger would run to him and not come home. I would have to come and get her.

May your faith, love and memories comfort you and give you Peace in your hearts...

Peace and Love,

Sadly our good friend and brother has gone before us. So many memories I had with him as we took a journey together as a friend, CT brother, football teammate at Gables High, and football teammate at Georgia. You will be missed good and faithful servant.
