Paul Berkowitz Obituary

BERKOWITZ, PAUL, 83, of North Miami, passed away on June 3, 2005. His body, but never his spirit, succumbed quietly with his family at his bedside, after a series of illnesses which he fought successfully for many years with enormous courage. Paul was born on December 12, 1921 in Salem, Massachusetts, where he was a proud graduate and football star for the Salem High Witches. He graduated as a mechanical engineer from the Carnegie Mellon Institute of Technology in 1947. Paul served during the Second World War as a Lieutenant in the US Air Force. He was enormously respected and universally admired in the Liquor industry. Paul was a principal and an executive of Old Mr. Boston, Boston, MA and a principal in American Distilling and in Mohawk Liquors. He enjoyed serving the community as a long time volunteer for SCORE / Service Core of Retired Executives. He was a longstanding member of Westview Country Club, where he was a determined and undeterred golfer. Paul was a Founder at Mt. Sinai Hospital and served as the head of the Finance committee, at Building 1 Jockey Club. Paul traveled the world as an avid boater and enthusiastic fisherman. A lifelong Red Sox fan, he vowed to live at least until the Boston Red Sox won the World Series. He was loved by everyone whose life he touched. He was a giant of a man. His outlook on all things and all people will be sorely missed. He was survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Vida, by his devoted sons Jeffrey (Yolanda) and Richard (Carla) Berkowitz, by his daughters Bonnie Berk (Dennis McLean), Sherrill Berk (Jeffrey Swartz), Robin (Richard) Seitz. He was a devoted grandfather to Andrew, Michael, Louis, Hannah, Rachel, Haley, Alexander, Noah, Loree, Taylor and Mareesa. Paul leaves his brother Marshall (Sandra) Berkowitz, his nieces Nancy and Melissa (Rob) Netkin and nephews Howard and Nathan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Beth Sholom, 4144 Chase Avenue, Miami Beach, 305-538-7231. To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.herald.com/obituaries.

Vida,

I am saddened to hear that Paul had a long difficult time with illness but how uplifting it was to hear all the tributes to a guy that put his best foot forward even under these difficult times.

Paul reminded me so much of my father. They found each other at a party at our house and I remember feeling how alike they were. Namely, "Gentle-men", kind, and always easy to get along with. Paul had that special ability to make me feel close to him; even when I hadn't seen him for a year! He was "a cut above" most. His dedication to you and the family is enviable. I know your support system is there, as he was there for them. Ruth & I extend our warm wishes to you and the family. Paul, when I see you again I"ve got some great jokes for you to add to your collection. Le chaim!!

Paul called me on or about May 20. He left word with my daughter. He did not know he was reaching me in Toulouse France where I was spending my birthday with my family. I returned home today to read of his death.

Everything in his obituary is on target. I worked with him overthe past few years at SCORE. He was loved by both his colleagues and his clients. I think one of his best qualitites was his ability to listen well to others and respond appropriately. I considered myself his friend. He has left many wonderful memories with so many people he has touched.
