R. Goode Obituary

GOODE, R. RAY, of Miami-Dade, passed away quietly on Thursday evening, July 14th. Mr. Goode was a coal-miner's son, born in Pineville, WV, on February 21, 1937 to parents, Walter and Lillie Goode. He obtained his under graduate degree from the University of Charleston, WV, and a Master's degree in Business Administration from Penn State University. After joining Miami-Dade County as a budget analyst in 1962, his talents were recognized and he served as Miami- Dade County's Manager in 1970 through 1976. As County Manager, he was the principle architect for the County's Decade of Progress Bond issue. In 1976, Ray joined the Babcock Company, ultimately becoming Chairman and CEO of the Company. Throughout Ray Goode's career, he was universally respected for his leadership, integrity and compassion for his fellow man. He got his greatest enjoyment out of helping others, and the love he had for his family, friends and fishing. Ray was well known for his lust of life, his sense of humor and contagious laughter. His civic service included President of the Orange Bowl Committee, Zoological Society, Builders Association, Chairman of the University of Miami Board of Trustees, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Florida Chamber of Commerce and its Foundation, Community Partnership for the Homeless, Florida Memorial College, Nat Moore Foundation, Salvation Army, Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition, and Sante Fe Healthcare. As CEO of We Will Rebuild, he administered 28 million dollars that had been raised by community leaders following Hurricane Andrew. Ray then served as Vice President-Public Affairs for Ryder System and as Executive Director of the Ryder System Charitable Foundation. Ray was honored with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce's highest award, "Sand In My Shoes" in 1988 and received an Honorary Doctorate from Florida Memorial College. Mr. Goode served on the Board of Directors of AvMed Health Plan, PRIDE of Florida, Duda Farms, University of Charleston and the Salvation Army. Ray's unwavering moral compass was based on his faith and deep commitment to his church and his Lord within Who's House he now resides. Survived by his loving wife of forty-years, Sandra; daughters, Debbie (Tim) Murphy, and Donna Cantin; grandchildren, Hayden and Madison Murphy, Ray and Jessica Cantin; sisters, Mary Gunter, Dora Johnson, Leila Anderson, Watsie Hill and Faye Browning; brothers, Lloyd Goode and Herbert Goode. Visitation Sunday, July 17 from 5:00 p.m -9:00 p.m at Stanfill Funeral Home, SW 106st. and U.S.1. Memorial Service Monday, July 18th at 2:00 p.m., Old Cutler Presbyterian Church, 14401 Old Cutler Rd., with interment at Woodlawn South Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Community Partnership for the Homeless, 1550 North Miami Ave., Miami, FL 33129, and the American Cancer Society/Renal Cell Research To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.herald.com/obituaries.

Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

It has been a tremendous loss to the Goode family, his many friends, the Univ. of Miami and South Florida. Ray was a giving person and gave a great deal to so many. He made a great difference in all of the lives he touched and we are all much better off because of our association with Ray. I personally have the fondest of memories of Ray and Sandy when we attended many Hurricane Football Games together. He is missed sorely. Ray will be missed but never forgotten

To the Goode Family.

I just learned of Ray's passing and wanted to express my heartfelt best wishes to you. I worked for Ray two times in my career. Once when he was County Manager and again as a loaned executive at We Will Rebuild. After I left Ryder, Ray joined the company and we stayed in touch over the years. Ray was my mentor and friend. I will surely miss him. Sincerely, Joel Lanken

To Ray's family, I am sorry to hear the news of his passing. So many fond memories of our Pineville High School days, playing football, basketball, baseball and track together. Also, the times we spent with brothers, Joe and Fred, hunting, fishing, camping and Nashville trips to the Grand Ole Opry. I can tell you, Ray wore out the back seat of our car. THE GOOD OLE DAYS! Wish there would have been more of those days in the later years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sandy, Debbie and Donna, and all of his extended family. How wonderful that he was able to know and enjoy his four grandchildren, and to take such pride in his daughters' accomplishments and adult lives.

There's much to be said for a man that is always smiling, as evidenced by his tremendous achievements -- most all on behalf of others. Ray was most helpful to me many times in my South Florida career, and I will always be indebted. How fortunate for Dade County, the Babcock Co., Ryder and most every key and vital beneficial organization in South Florida -- and millions of individuals who directly and indirectly gained from his selflessness -- that Ray Goode chose Miami to make his mark.

(We notified Christy, who now lives in Orlando with her husband and two sons.)

To Ray's family---I share your sorrow. Ray was a very special

Cousin. I will always cherise the many visits to his house in Pineville during the 1940's and 50's as we were growing up---we played 2 high school football games in the Fall of 1955 and my team, Oceana, won both games----but then during the Winter Ray's PHS Minutemen basketball team trounced us both games!! Ray was always special to me in my youth---and throughtout the rest of my life---you can be proud to know that he made a big impact on a lot of people throughout his life!!

At our last reunion, you told me of Ray's success but I don't think I realized what an impact he had made in this world until I saw that his death had made national news. I read his Obituary in the Dayton Daily News this morning. Ray was a great leader in our high school and I can see that he used his talents to do many great things all through his life. It is comforting to know that Ray was a good Christian man.

Dear Goode people:

Kay and I extend our deepest sympathy on your loss. Ray was truly, one of the finest people I have ever known and I will miss him very much. The front page story and today's obit in The Miami Herald paid an outstanding tribute to the man loved by thousands. However, I feel that we will never know all the many people he befriended and the needy that he helped.

Now, we don't have to worry where "The Guv" is. He is now in that "better place" we often speak of. He is probably sitting with a cigar listening to bluegrass music and thinking about where he will plant his mango trees.

We want to get with you for lunch when we return from WV. We are sorry that we cannot be there for the services.
