Rita Loftus Obituary

Rita Chabot Loftus

October 24, 1939 - September 26, 2024

Miami, Florida - Miami, Florida - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Rita Chabot Loftus on September 26, 2024. She will be profoundly missed by her loving family: her sons Tim, Bill, and Tom; her daughter Julie; daughters-in-law Tanya, Linda, and Alana; her grandchildren Jessie, Madison, Delaney, Olivia, Sophee, Lauren, Lindsey, Matthew, and Sean; and her great-granddaughter Kaya. She is also survived by her sisters Patricia and Mary, along with many cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Rita was predeceased by her parents, Julia and Ambrose Chabot, and her brother Ambrose Jr.

Born and raised in Miami, Rita attended Coral Gables High School and the University of Miami before working at Florida Power and Light, where she met her future husband, Terence Loftus. They were married for over 20 years before parting ways, and she never remarried.

In 1979, Rita joined Eastern Air Lines in the security department and eventually became a flight attendant. After Eastern ceased operations she joined Rich International, also as a flight attendant. At Rich International, she was again fortunate to fly with her brother Ambrose, who was a pilot. She also met her long-time friend Maria, also a flight attendant, and they traveled the world until Rich ceased operations.

Rita then worked with her dear friend and neighbor of 60 years, Judy, at a neurosurgery practice in the Dadeland area until her retirement.

Rita cherished her summers in Morgan, Vermont, with her sister Patricia Runsvold. Surrounded by family, she frequently expressed that Vermont was her favorite place to be.

Rita will be missed by all who knew her for her warmth, infectious laugh, adventurous spirit, and love for her family, friends, and dogs. Rita often spoke of volunteering at the Humane Society, expressing sadness when her health made it too great a challenge.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at Pinecrest Gardens, Inspiration Center, 11000 Red Road, Pinecrest, FL 33156. 11:00 a.m.

I recognized the last name, husband Terry our bicycle club Treasurer in the late 1970s, and if I recall Rita did also ride a bicycle at that time. May she rest in God's peace - I'm not sure if Terry preceded her, but I do believe he did after retiring from government.

I´m so sorry.

Tim, you may remember that I knew her from back in the day when she was an EAL Security Officer in the early `80s. I used to wave to her just about every morning when I drove onto the EAL MIA Base and she checked my ID. Very pretty, nice, lady. Later on, when she became a Flight Attendant, and we were flying together, I will never forget how incredibly excited she was that you had been hired as a EAL Pilot.

Blue Skies & Tail Winds, Rita. RIP.
