Robert Beckham Obituary

BECKHAM, ROBERT J., peacefully went home to the Lord on September 14, 2009. The son of Judge Walter and Clara Beckham, Bob was born January 21, 1930 in Miami and graduated from Miami Senior High School. He was a Navy veteran and graduated with honors from both Emory University and the University of Florida College of Law where he was editor of the Law Review. He began his legal career in Miami in 1955 and moved to Jacksonville in 1975. For over 50 years, Bob was proud to be a trial lawyer as he zealously represented clients forced to rely upon our legal system for protection and justice. He tried hundreds of cases on behalf of people and companies, the powerful and powerless, and won his last trial only a month before his death. Volunteering his time with the Innocence Project, Bob helped prove a man sentenced to life in prison had been wrongly convicted of murder and the conviction was set aside and the man freed. He received the 2007 Equal Justice Award from Jacksonville Area Legal Aid. He was member of many legal organizations and a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville. He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Emily, his brother Walter (Ethel), his sons Robert (Sandra), Eugene (Pamela), and John; and also by Emily's three children, Walter Mingledorff II (wife Tina and son Walter III), Christa Mingledorff (daughter Cailla Fleming), Beth Higgins (husband Ron and daughter Addie), and her mother, Emogene Ashmore. He was much-loved by all. Bob's funeral will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 225 East Duval Street, Jacksonville, Florida at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2009, followed by burial in Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville, Florida at 225 East Duval Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32202, or the Downtown Ecumenical Services Council (D.E.S.C.) at 215 Ocean Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32202. Arrangements are by Hardage- Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida 32207. To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

Dear Emily and Family: My heart grieves for you and for all the people Bob touched with his generosity and compassion. Wally and I both loved him so very much, but you know that. I will always cherish that subtle yet impish sense of humor. Bob was the rock for all of us, and I will keep so many happy memories. I am so happy that Sharon called me so that I could let him know how much I love him---and always will. My thoughts and prayers will be forever with you and all the children. I like to think that Bob and Wally are sharing a good cigar and a good laugh right now. Love, always -- Megan Redman Bosurgi

Dear Emily,Gene,Bo,and Mack,
I was so sorry to learn of Uncle Bob's passing. Ann Hicks called Mom(Barbara Mclean) to tell us. I thought of the last time I spoke with him which was when my Dad died. He called me and had such kind and comforting words. I remember him visiting so many times with Grandmother Mclean(Polly)in NC. He attended my high school graduation at FUMC so many years ago. This bring back so many stories Grandmother would tell me. I can picture the sisters now. I loved Aunt Clara, as she was so sweet. Babe could be a little intimidating. Take care family.

Dear “Aunt” Emily and Family,

Jeremy and I wish so much we could have been there today to honor and celebrate Bob’s life. He has been a cherished part of the Farmer family for as long as I can remember … beginning with my Dad’s appointment to FUMC in Jacksonville in the early 80s. In my heart and mind he is (and always will be) the most important man I know – not for his grandeur in his professional world, but for the way he lived each and every day. For his unwavering willingness to help others, for his kindness, for his ability to perceive and respond to the needs of others around him, for his loyalty, good-humor, stubborn-defiance … just to name a few.

We have been changed by his life … and yours Aunt Emily.

We love you

Dear Emily and family.

We are truly saddened by the passing of a true giant of the legal profession. Without fanfare or self aggrandizement Bob represented his many clients with an admirable passion and utmost fealty to the law that he loved. He was a lawyer's lawyer and a friend. His exemplary professionalism and quiet resolve taught many of us what it meant to be a trial lawyer and more importantly how one professional should treat another both in the heat of battle and after the day is done.

We will miss him. Our prayers are with you in this time of sorrow.

To Emily, Gene, Bo and Mack, my deepest sympathies to you and your families. Bob was a very special person that I was proud to know. Never did I mention his name in legal circles when I wasn't told what a fine lawyer he was, but I knew that first hand having worked for him and his law firm for 18 years. Emily, I am so glad you were in his life. I will miss him very much and his visits to Miami when we would have a chance to have lunch and catch up.

Bob and I were the "Railroad Division" at the Nichols firm in 1961 and 1962. Later we tried the "Lamb" case and the "Hogan" case together, each with stunning results.
Bob was always a wonderful friend and I treasure our years together.
Among my many memories of Bob are our celebrations of "Bastille Day" at the Nichols firm.
My deepest condolences to Bob's family.

To the Beckham Family,
Bob and I were dear friends when we were youngsters. We were on the same baseball team at Shendoah; he was catcher and I played second base. We had many great friends and we enjoyued each other's company. It was a very special time in my life.
I will miss Bob tremendously.
We have you in our thoughts and prayers.

To Bob's Family:

My deepest condolences in the loss of your dear one.

It was painful for me to read of Bob's death in The Miami Herald yesterday. Hours before, I had shared my high school memory book with one of the former Miami High School teachers at her 100th birthday celebration. In that book are numerous pictures of the sixteen-year-old Bob, one showing him in a comedy act at our annual "Jamboree" show.

Bob and I were good friends in the very large and accomplished choral groups at Miami High in the mid-40's, Bob in the bass section and I as accompanist.

In those days Bob was frequently the creator of mirth and mischief, but was very serious about contributing to the teamwork demanded as we strove toward excellence in the arts.

When my father died in the mid-60's, Bob showed up on my doorstep to offer his legal services for anything I might need. After not seeing him for twenty years, here was the generous, caring person all of us had known and loved as teenagers. In reading the comments of others, it is obvious that Bob continued to be a trusted and beloved friend to all whom he encountered. His high school buddies would have expected this to be so.

Heartfelt sympathy to you family members and to the myriad friends who will miss him greatly.

Bob was a wonderful man, trail lawyer and member of our profession! I will cherish the cases Bob and I had against each other as they were a great learning experience for me, as it not only taught me many trial skills, but also how a true professional trial lawyer should act. Cela and I send our deepest sympathies and condolences to Emily and the entire family.

Over 30 years ago, I was on a plane from Miami to Jacksonville for a job interview here. Bob Beckham happened to have the seat next to mine, and we struck up a conversation because his brother Walter had been one of my teachers at the University of Miami Law School. Talking to Bob convinced me that Jacksonville would be a good place to live and work, so I accepted the job that I was fortunate enough to be offered. I soon learned from other lawyers about Bob's stature in the legal community: one of the best trial lawyers in the state, liked and respected by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. For several years, his office and mine were in the same building, on the same floor. I often worked weekends, and I would often be treated to the smell of cigar smoke wafting from the other side of the elevators. I was grateful for the cigars, because they let me know Bob was in his office, and available for me to knock on his door for some sage advice about a legal issue or encouraging words about a difficult case. A few years ago, he honored me by asking me to join his pro bono team in the defense of a man who was granted a new trial based on new DNA evidence. The opportunity to work with such a fine lawyer is a memory I will always cherish. He was a giant in our profession, and a true gentleman in every way. His passing is a great loss to us all.

Emily, I knew Bob through one of his classmates, John Mooers, for whom I used to work and at times, I did some work for Bob when he first was making his transition from Miami to Jacksonville in 1975. I want you to know he was truly a "Southern Gentleman" in every sense of the word and all who knew him will miss him terribly. We all loved him. May God Comfort You at this time and forever.

Emily:Our hearts go out to you and family at your loss of Bob.I will particularly miss singing next to him in the choir and his wise counsel in many church meetings.I immediately thought of a quote from Shakespeare."Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night sweet prince,And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." Julie and I will not be returning to Jacksonville until late in October when we can offer our condolences in person. Dear Ms. Emily and family,

I am honored that I had the opportunity to work for and know Mr. Beckham. I've never known a man so loving, compassionate, kind and giving. He was the "salt of the earth" in his practice of law.

He was so supportive of me and Ray during our adoption of Danielle in 1993.

I will miss our occasional lunches, but most of all miss my dear friend.

My prayers are with you.

Bob Beckham was a true Christian spirit who taught our Friendship Class at FUMC with grace and wisdom. His many contributions to our church and the Christian faith exhibited a man who truly loved his Lord. He honored everyone and treated everyone with equality. He was a true "friend." He will be missed by all of us. My love and prayers are with Emily and the rest of the family. May God bless them and give them strength, peace and comfort.
