Sylvia Otero Obituary

Died peacefully at Baptist Hospital in Miami on May 28, 2017, aged 84, after a long illness. Devoted daughter of Esteban and Julie Masson; wife to Lorenzo Otero; mother of Daniel (Deborah) Otero, Paul (Barbara) Otero, Julie Otero, Ana (Eugenio) Gonzalez, and Brenda (Vicente) Asencio; with 10 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Born San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 10, 1932; moved to South Florida as a teenager with her family. A proud graduate of Gesu High School, she earned a B.A. in fine arts from the University of Miami, Class of 1954. Married Lorenzo, May 30, 1956, at the Church of the Little Flower in Coral Gables, where the two faithfully worshipped for decades. Loyally dedicated to generations of her extended family. She worked as a teacher for the Archdiocese of Miami for nearly 30 years, serving multiple generations of students, and enjoyed creating works of art, especially in crochet and needlepoint. Survived by her husband of 60 years, her sister Elsie Caldwell and brother Steve (Donna) Masson, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Services were held at the Church of the Little Flower and at C-R Woodlawn Park North in Coral Gables on May 30, 2017. Memorial donations can be made in support of the Sisters of St. Joseph at ssjfl.org.

May God grant my dear friend, Sylvia, an eternal rest. She sought to love and serve Him all the days of her life, for this we give thanks to God who gave us the gift of Sylvia. My friend, I will miss you and I love you. I look forward to the moment when we will one day reunite. Until then please pray for us. To all my Otero Family my prayers and love.
