Ted Finkel Obituary

FINKEL, TED Health-Care Visionary, Dies at 80 Ted Finkel, husband, father, grandfather and a visionary trailblazer in the health-care field, died on Wednesday at his home in Orlando, FL. He was 80. Growing up in Miami Beach, Ted was a summer lifeguard, avid sportsfan, and was the first bat boy for the Pittsburgh Pirates when they moved to Miami for spring training. He was also a pitcher for the University of Florida baseball team, and a lifelong tennis player and golfer. As a trailblazer in the field of health-care, Ted opened the county's first Women's Diagnostic Center in Atlanta, later opening centers in Jacksonville and Denver. Starting his career as an insurance salesman in Miami, Ted was inducted in the 1996 Million Dollar Roundtable. Along with Martin Gelb, Ted founded the Mt. Sinai Young President's Club in 1977, and served as YPC Chairman from 1979-1981. As a result of his affiliation with Emory University's radiology department, Ted became aware of lithotripsy, a new technology then only practiced in Europe. After spending time in Europe, Ted was convinced of the benefits of this new treatment in kidney stones, and founded Medicus Mobile Therapies, in 1984 and University Lithotripter in 1986. Ted is a past member of Board of Trustees, Mount Sinai Medical Facility, Miami Beach, Florida; was instrumental in the start-up of Genesis Women's Diagnostic Centers, Ltd., which established two of the first diagnostic centers for women, one of which was purchased by the University of Florida; and most recently President and CEO of Medicus Diagnostic Centers, Ltd originally founded in 1984 in Atlanta, GA and later moved to Orlando in 1995. Over the years, Ted has created and managed several healthcare related companies: Orlando Surgery Center Ltd, Energy Four, University Lithotripter, Ltd., Lasertripsy Techniques, Ltd., Thermal Therapies, Ltd., Lasertripsy Services, Ltd., and Technical Resource Services. Ted was regarded as a generous and compassionate employer, treating his employees as extended family members. Concerned not only with job performance, but also with his employees' future and their families, he implemented several programs promoting his caring philosophy. University Lithotripter is the largest provider of lithotripsy treatment in Florida, and will continue to run with Ted's vision and philosophy intact. Ted and Adrienne, his devoted wife of 20 years, divided their time between their homes in Miami and Orlando, FL and Boone, NC. In North Carolina Ted was President of the Tennis Association of Hound Ears Country Club, and a supporter of Applachian State University and the Watauga Medical Center. Ted and Adrienne were also instrumented in the inception of the Temple of the High Country in Boone, NC. Ted is survived by his loving wife, Adrienne; his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Richard White; his son, Ian Rand ; and his granddaughters, Sydney and Samantha White. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 28, at Ohev Sahlom Cemetery, 6034 Old Winter Garden Road, at 12:30 PM, with Rabbi Steven W. Engel and Cantor Jacqueline Rawiszer of Congregation of Liberal Judasim officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Rabbi's Fund, Temple of the High Country, PO Box 2895, Boone NC 28607. Arrangements entrusted to Beth Shalom Memorial Chapel, 640 Lee Road, Orlando 32810. 407.599.1180

My deepest sympathy to the Finkel family. I was secretary to Ted in South Miami, until the time he was moving to Atlanta to start on this awesome medical journey. He had a personality plus and was the "best dresser". So many fond memories.

Ted was a lovely person, and loads of fun to be with. We knew him during our school years, and continued to enjoy his friendship and wonderful company here in Miami. To see the successful personal life and career he achieved and enjoyed truly warms our hearts. It is also a tribute to you, and your family. We extend our deepest sympathies.
