When I first met Bill Mason Haynes it must have been at the TuleLake Auto Parts before Dick Bunch owned it 50 years ago. To my young self this tall overall wearing man with a well worn hat on seemed so old to my young city self, when in fact Bill was only 45.
He asked me who I was since I did not look like folk around here, I answered his question, where did I come from where do I live and even in a hurry to get the parts he had ordered over to Red Butlers shop he took the time to welcome me with a strong handshake.
A year or so passed and as the night janitor at TuleLake High School I would see Bill at sporting events and after school things his son Mason was involved in. Later as head custodian at Newell Elementary School I met and worked with "THE COOK" Marcella Haynes. From then on I would say Bill and Marcella almost as one word. When together with those two they would bill my head with stories from the past and talk about the future and my respect and love for them grew with each conversation.
Those two got older and guess I did as well. As luck would have it Renee and I were invited to Red Butlers 80th birthday party at Mike and Wanda's and luck holding strong we were seated at the table with Red, Bill and Marcella and we were treated to stories of late night drives to rescue people stuck in the mud or snow and their return to home base as the sun came up and Marcella making sure they ate before going to work.
Last New Years Eve we invited Bill and Marcella over for dinner and to see our yearly candle Christmas tree. Neither had ever seen one and when Bill entered and saw the 8 foot noble fir ablaze with the light from the candles Bill's smile was huge. We all played the blow out the candle tree contest and Bill one.
Back into the house Marcella took out party favors and noise makers and paper shooting mess makers deployed in our kitchen. On their ride home Bill was still talking about the night, as did we.
From that last day of the year 2024 every time spent with them became even more dear. Helping Bill to try and get this one beyond hard puzzle together that after many days ended up being put back in the box. Bill would not give up on it but everyone else did.
Early this month per Bill's wishes he moved on to the rest of his story in home with the love of his life for 74 years and his family by his side.
Bill had said, "nobody gets to live forever." but Bill Haynes will live as long as those of us remember what a wonderful person he was. All he touched will have a heart full of love of this man of wisdom, integrity, love of family, love of country and love of his faith.
So long buddy, it's been good to know ya. The Misso's Modoc County

My condolences go out to Bill's whole family. What a great MAN that I considered a good friend even though there is a lil age difference. Very proud to still farm Bill's home place to this day and He will be so missed by me and my crew. Bill always loved watching every move we made on the farm and always took time to walk out and talk to my guys. I got to visit with Bill sitting together in front of his house just the day before he got ill. I knew he was slipping when I asked hows Marcella and Bill said well she's getting older so she went to bed early. He said she is 77 you know. Oh ok Bill. Sad to see him slipping but his great stories and history will create great memories. RIP my friend.
