Daniel Read Obituary

Daniel K. Read Jr.

July 31, 1934 - May 14, 2021

BRISTOL, Va.

Daniel K. Read Jr. passed away peacefully after a long illness on Friday, May 14, 2021, at the age of 86.

Dan graduated from Williams College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, before going into the United States Air Force to serve as a pilot flying various types of jets. He married Barbara Sass in 1959 and had four sons. After the birth of the first two sons, he left active-duty service to attend the University of Virginia School of Law, while still serving in the Air Force reserves. Following his graduation, he practiced law in the greater New York area for 10 years, specializing in maritime and aviation law, before returning to Virginia to go into general practice.

After 10 years of living and working in Buchanan County, Dan moved to Abingdon where he met his best friend and longtime partner, Charlie Jesse. Dan and Charlie practiced law together for nearly 3 decades, during which time Charlie introduced Dan to Carmen Verges. Dan and Carmen were married in 1997, residing at first in Abingdon and more recently in Bristol until Carmen's death in 2018.

Dan is survived by his four sons, Jack (Amy), Timothy (Sheila), Kevin (Angela), and John; one stepdaughter, Alice Schneider; one stepson, Tommy Raynor; as well as three grandchildren, John Read Jr., Dominic Read, and Dalton Read. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia, and four nieces, Cynthia, Melissa, Michele, and Amy.

A Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., followed by a church service at 2 p.m., on Saturday, May 22, 2021. Both will be held at Highlands Fellowship Church in Abingdon, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be mailed to: Shriners Hospitals for Children, Processing Center, P.O. Box 863765, Orlando, FL 32886.

Prior to Dan's passing, he resided at Brookdale Senior Living in Bristol, Virginia, where he lived happily for nearly one and a half years. He frequently praised the staff's effectiveness and the nursing team's professionalism and competence.

Yesterday was one of the saddest days of my life...I had to say the final Goodbye to my most cherished Friend and "Brother"....and it was a true honor to have taken part in his Masonic Memorial Service. Dan was the "Brother I Never Had"...we shared so many happy experiences in our Masonic/Shrine/and personal travels. He brightened up any place he happened to be with his glowing smile and contagious humor...never meeting a stranger as he showed his love for life in all he did. But I don't need to explain this to those who were Blessed and Privileged to have known Dan....he simply had an appetite for life....NOT to mention his appetite for food and dining out...which was entertaining to observe...smile. After marrying Miss Carman and she took on his last name...he also had a name change...from Dan to..."Donnie Bouy"..which I effectually called him from that day on. So much could be written about Brother Dan and still not have expressed all we knew and felt about him. If you happen to be one of those fortunate ones he called "Friend"...nothing more needs to be said. There is a great void in my life that cannot be filled....but...I know that my "Donnie Buoy" is in a much better place now...no more suffering in this life....as he leaves behind a Golden Legacy and set a standard by which we all should strive to live....always sharing and greeting each day with the joy he had for us ALL. He will "never " be gone as long as there are those of us who will continue to carry his memory in our hearts. Rest in Peace my Brother and always make us aware that you are watching and looking down on us as we attempt to be vessels of joy to others as you once were. So Mote It Be...Johnnie Cole
