Hubert Fletcher Obituary

Hubert Kyle Fletcher

St. Paul, VA – Hubert Kyle Fletcher, 90, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on May 3, 2024, at his home.

He was born in St. Paul, Virginia, the son of the late Holland K. Fletcher and Mabel Hines Fletcher. In addition to his parents, Kyle was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Hines Fletcher, and a niece, Paige Fletcher.

At an early age, Kyle dedicated his life to Christ and became a member of the First Baptist Church in St. Paul. He also attended Calvary Baptist Church in Castlewood for many years. After graduating from St. Paul High School, Kyle continued his education at Emory and Henry College and Carson Newman College. He received his master's degree from Radford University and an Education Specialist degree from UVA.

1955 was an eventful year for Kyle. He joined the Air Force and married the love of his life, Doris Crowder, also of St. Paul, Virginia. Kyle was a true patriot, serving his country in the Air Force, Navy, and Army Reserves for a total of thirty-nine years. During his time in the Army Reserves, Kyle was a serious competitor on the Army Reserve Shooting Team.

After leaving the Navy in 1972, Kyle returned to St. Paul, where he became a partner in St. Paul Builders and Supply Co. and began a new career as a teacher and football coach. While at St. Paul High School, he was instrumental in starting and coaching the Cross-Country Teams, which competed at the state level many times.

Active in Civic Life, Kyle was a charter member of the St. Paul Tomorrow Board, served on the Wise County School Board and Wise County Airport Board, represented St. Paul on the Lenowisco Planning District Commission, and was a member of the St. Paul Town Council. One of his proudest accomplishments was the twelve years he served as Mayor of St. Paul. Under his leadership the town undertook a major revitalization project as well as a project to improve the infrastructure in the downtown area.

In addition to serving his country, his Civic life, teaching and coaching, Kyle was an avid bird hunter. As he sauntered through the wooded hollows, he always had a special English setter to share in his hunting adventures. Kyle took great pleasure in sharing numerous stories (to which his former students can attest) about his life experiences.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-nine years, Doris Crowder Fletcher; three sons, Hubert Kyle Fletcher, Jr. and wife, Rebecca of Oviedo, Florida, Michael Crowder Fletcher and wife, Kelly of Atlanta, Georgia, and C. Kevin Fletcher and wife April, of Charlottesville, Virginia; three grandchildren, McKenzie Rainey and husband, Greg, Taylor Mishko and husband, Jon, and Jack Fletcher; nieces and nephews, Josie Fletcher Reese (Charlie) and sons, Henry and George, Betsy Weiss (Rob), Barbie Healey (Dave), Jennifer Clancy (Shawn), Rebecca Crowder, Amy Williams, Caroline Washington, Deborah Craig (John), and Clark Crowder; three sisters-in-law, Betsy Fletcher, Benny Crowder, and Judy Crowder; one cousin, Brenda Webber (Steve); and special friends, Harry and Juanita Kelly. Kyle also leaves behind a host of great nieces and nephews, former students, colleagues, and friends whose lives he touched.
