Calvin Shaw Obituary

Dr. Calvin Charles Shaw, Ph. D, age 90, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2017.
Calvin was born in Denison, Texas, at the then Madonna Hospital on July 9, 1927 to the parents of Henry and Sadie Shaw.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Dorothy M. Shaw, whom he married June 8, 1968; both parents; and son Ronald Van Shaw who passed away in 1967.
Shortly after high school, Calvin was drafted to the U.S. Army in 1945 where he served for two years at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. During this time he assisted on the Military wounded and illness from World War ll battles.
The first college he attended was Southeastern State College of Oklahoma and achieved his Bachelor of Arts in Education and continued studies for his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Philosophy, which were both achieved at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas.
On November 11, 1950, he began his teaching career in Denison at Raynal Elementary. In 1952 he moved to Dallas, Texas and became an art teacher, and then as a school principal of various elementary schools in the Dallas I.S.D.
After retiring sometime in the 80's, Calvin and wife Dorothy did some traveling to various parts of the world, worked small shops of artography and a Pop-A-Charlie's. He loved arts, did several sculptures and paintings, and had a love for cats; he did not mind fostering stray cats.
He is survived by two other sons, Gary Wayne Shaw and wife Ann, and Anthony Del Shaw; two granddaughters of Dara Rookard with husband Steve Rookard; Alisa Anders with husband Andy Anders; three great-grandchildren of Tommy Rookard, Sarah Rookard, and Paul Rookard; three nieces of Barbara Neff, Susie Fowler, and Kathy McMillan; two nephews, Tommy Cheek and Glenn White; just to mention a few.
Calvin was born into a family of 12 brothers and sisters; Vadis Everett Shaw, Neva Jean Shaw Towns, Mildred Helen Shaw Hensley, Henrietta Shaw Wilson, Patrick Wilbert Shaw; half-brothers of John Hall Shaw, Henry Houston Shaw, Herbert Woodrow Shaw; half- sisters of Virginia Oreta Cheek, Mabel A. Shaw Cochnever, Ruby Lee Shaw McMenamy.
Funeral services will be Monday, September 25, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Bratcher Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mike Lawson of First Baptist Church of Sherman officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Memorial Cemetery in Denison.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donation be made to Meals on Wheels in your community in his honor.
