Charles Hix Obituary

VAN ALSTYNE - Charles Clifton Hix, 85, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2016, at his home in Van Alstyne, Texas, surrounded by his family. Charles, the oldest of six children, was born October 17, 1930 to Clifton (Kit) Hix and Lillie Ruth Crocker Hix in Van Alstyne, Texas. He started first grade at the Cold Springs 2-room school and later attended the Van Alstyne Schools. As a young man, he started to work in the Texas oil fields and soon met the love of his life, Wanda Faye Sprowls in Seymour, Texas. They married September 30. 1950 in Olney, Texas. By the time they moved to Wyoming, they had two children; Vicki two years old and Chuck two weeks old. They also lived in Montana, and South Dakota. After those adventures, Garland, Texas looked wonderful, and Charles started to work for Safeway as a truck driver and continued until his retirement in 1988. In 1976, he and Wanda built their home on Carter Street in Van Alstyne and made it a place of welcome for family, old friends and new ones. The back door was always open and the table set for whomever dropped by. Charles was a member of the First Baptist Church of Van Alstyne, Mantua Masonic Lodge, Leah Elliot Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, Shriners, the Cemetery Board and was an outstanding worker in all of these associations, leading and performing countless good deeds. During his retirement years, Charles enjoyed repairing lawn mowers, plowing gardens for friends, traveling to new places, drinking coffee at City Drug, taking the Mason widows to lunch, cheering for the Texas Rangers, eating red beans and fried potatoes, spinning tales of his youth, throwing back his head and laughing, and entertaining family and friends with stories about Van Alstyne's colorful history. Charles was preceded in death by his wife Wanda in January, 2011; his daughter Vicki Hix Bowen on March 23, 2016; his younger brothers Bobby Wayne Hix and James Dale Hix.
