VAN ALSTYNE - Charles Clifton Hix, 85, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2016, at his home in Van Alstyne, Texas, surrounded by his family. Charles, the oldest of six children, was born October 17, 1930 to Clifton (Kit) Hix and Lillie Ruth Crocker Hix in Van Alstyne, Texas. He started first grade at the Cold Springs 2-room school and later attended the Van Alstyne Schools. As a young man, he started to work in the Texas oil fields and soon met the love of his life, Wanda Faye Sprowls in Seymour, Texas. They married September 30. 1950 in Olney, Texas. By the time they moved to Wyoming, they had two children; Vicki two years old and Chuck two weeks old. They also lived in Montana, and South Dakota. After those adventures, Garland, Texas looked wonderful, and Charles started to work for Safeway as a truck driver and continued until his retirement in 1988. In 1976, he and Wanda built their home on Carter Street in Van Alstyne and made it a place of welcome for family, old friends and new ones. The back door was always open and the table set for whomever dropped by. Charles was a member of the First Baptist Church of Van Alstyne, Mantua Masonic Lodge, Leah Elliot Eastern Star, Scottish Rite, Shriners, the Cemetery Board and was an outstanding worker in all of these associations, leading and performing countless good deeds. During his retirement years, Charles enjoyed repairing lawn mowers, plowing gardens for friends, traveling to new places, drinking coffee at City Drug, taking the Mason widows to lunch, cheering for the Texas Rangers, eating red beans and fried potatoes, spinning tales of his youth, throwing back his head and laughing, and entertaining family and friends with stories about Van Alstyne's colorful history. Charles was preceded in death by his wife Wanda in January, 2011; his daughter Vicki Hix Bowen on March 23, 2016; his younger brothers Bobby Wayne Hix and James Dale Hix. He is survived by children Chuck Hix and wife Penny of Allen, Texas; Royce Hix and wife Toni of Van Alstyne, Texas and son-in-law Keith Bowen of Van Alstyne, Texas. Charles was blessed to have six grandchildren: Carrie Bowen and husband Dan Simmering of Norfolk, Virginia; Jay Bowen and wife Elys of McKinney, Texas; Jarod Bowen of Sherman, Texas; Leslie Haynie and husband Ricky Allen of Richardson, Texas; Amy Hix and husband Nick Ragland of Van Alstyne, Texas; Rachel Hix of Las , Colinas, Texas; and 14 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchild; 3 siblings: Marilyn Hix Marks of Van Alstyne; Kathy Hix Mymern of Pagosa Springs, Colorado; Carol Hix Boston of McKinney; and many other loving nieces, nephews and relatives.
Friends may visit with the family of Charles Hix onTuesday evening, July 19th, 2016, at the Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne, TX from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Scoggins is located at 637 West Van Alstyne Pkwy., Van Alstyne, TX. 903-482-5225.A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, 20th. July, 2016 at the First Baptist Church, located at 121 East Marshall, Van Alstyne, TX 903-481-6334. The Reverend Gary Gibbs of the Central Christian Church of Sherman, TX and Reverend Mike Loving of the First Baptist Church of Van Alstyne, TX will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a contribution be made to the Scottish Rite Hospital or the Van Alstyne Cemetery Association.
