CORNELIUS HAYES Obituary

CORNELIUS HAYES Cornelius "Neil" Hayes was born September 12, 1928, in New Haven, Connecticut and grew up in the New Haven / Hartford Connecticut area, the youngest son Theodora Elizabeth and John Thomas Hayes. He was a 1950 graduate of Yale University as a Phi Beta Kappa and a 1954 graduate of George Washington Medical School in Washington, D.C. His extensive knowledge on almost every subject earned him the nickname "The Walking Encyclopedia". After serving two years as a Captain in the Army, Neil moved to Galveston, Texas to serve his residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch. It was in Galveston that he met his wife, Lorraine Schlote, a research technician at the John Sealy Hospital and Research Center. Lorraine and Neil married in the spring of 1960, and they relocated to Sherman, Texas, where Neil practiced internal medicine until his retirement in 1993. After retirement, he and Lorraine relocated from Sherman to Highland Village, Texas to be closer to their grandchildren. Through the retirement years, they were both welcome fixtures at their grandson's high school soccer matches and granddaughter's high school volleyball matches. Lorraine and Neil traveled the world extensively throughout their years together, with a focus on history, art, and archaeology. Neil was an avid sports fan; the Dallas Cowboy, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Mavericks, were his favorite teams. He was passionate about history and knowledge about different cultures and those that knew him know he loved a good debate. Neil is survived by his wife, Lorraine; daughter Diana; daughter Maureen and her husband Barry Sando of Plano, Texas; grandson Cameron and his wife Kaitlin of Houston, Texas; granddaughter Mallori, her husband Zachary Roberts of Bentonville, Arkansas; and two great grandchildren. A family and friends Celebration of Life is planned for a future date. If desired, memorials in Neil's name may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

As a young nurse at WNJ in 1987 working the ER, i always enjoyed having Dr Hayes checking on patients. He was so knowledgable and willing to share this with us. He was truly an excellent physcian.

Dr. Hayes was my physician when I was growing up in Sherman. He was a very thorough doctor who was rather shy intellectual. His partner Dr. Triplett stayed with my father who was dying at Sherman Community Hospital until I could return from Fort Eustis, Virginia. I am eternally for the care that Dr. Hayes provided.

May eternal rest be granted to him and perpetual light shine upon him.

An important member of the Medical and Surgical Clinic in Sherman for many years, Neil was a wonderful colleague and friend to the rest of us physicians. He served as a great asset to the TEXOMA community and health care in the area. RIP Dr. Hayes.
