I was one of the fortunate ones who was also a student of Mr. Gohlke's at SHS, 1973-1976. He taught me so much more than how to harmonize with the other girls in the SHS Girl's Choir. He had one favorite saying that I still use today, "Simple minds are easily amused". He pushed us hard, but I got to see his compassionate side many times, one of them being the year I represented the Choir Dept. and became Homecoming QUeen, 1976. He was thrilled for me, him & the department. To me, he was bigger than life, teaching me about life all along the way. I loved Mr. Gohlke dearly and God bless the Gohlke family during this time of great loss. Carol Baker Peters

I remember Duane as a wonderful pianist. We played together in several piano recitals together growing up in Denison; also had the privilege of singing in the choir at DHS one year with Duane. I can vision him as the influential and respected teacher that I've read he was. He was spiritual leader in our Class of '62 as Hi-Y Chaplain and Cafeteria Prayer Chairman. My thoughts and prayers go out to all his family. I know he will be missed.

I had the good fortune to be a member of the DHS choir from '59-62 with Duane. I remember him as always cheerful, upbeat, and positive in every way. As I read the words of other friends as well those of his students, I'm not surprised that he is held in such high regard. I'm only sorry that we lost touch after '62...Duane would have made a great lifetime friend!

Dear Bobbie, Josh, and Jennie: Ed and I are saddened to learn of Duane's passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Duane was such a positive influence on Stephen and Ann. He was a dedicated teacher who cared deeply for his students--always inspiring them to do their best and strive for more. We often think of the fun (and frustrations) of the choir trips we chaperoned, and will always remember how much he trusted his students to be on their best behavior. May his memory be a comfort to you.

Mrs. Gohlke,
I am very sorry to hear of your loss. My prayers are with you and your family. Mr. Gohlke was the most demanding teacher I had at Sherman High, but I believe he made me a better pianist and a better person. I have much respect and admiration for him.

Dear Bobbie,
I was so sad to hear of Duane's passing, as were my children. He was very much loved by his students, and even those who never had the privilege of being taught by him. He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Gohlke was mine and my brother Steve's choir director at SHS, Class of '83 and '74. He was both serious and silly, worked us hard, expected our best, and quietly loved us. The first time I saw his soft side; it was 1980 or '81, he brought Jenny up to school...the love and tenderness he felt for his baby girl just oozed. Thank you, Mr. Gohlke, for all the kids you inspired to always work hard and do what you love!

Just want to send our sincere sympathy at this time of your lose. I as a student will remember Mr.Gohlke for what he taught me in choir class. He had enough faith in me to see that I had the potential as a freshman to be apart of his accapella choir. And I must say I followed in his footsteps for years. As a choir director. Thanks Mr.Gohlke for the memories. Dairius Shelton. Class 92".

I was a member of Mr. Gohlke"s choirs both at Piner and SHS. I can remember like it was yesterday going to Austin for contest and him making JoAnna sign at the hotel that night, because we all would not go to sleep and was jumping in and out of the pool. We found out he was true to his word, we could do very well if we would committe. He was right we received a "one " rating the next day.
Mr. Gohlke you will be missed. My prays go out to Bobbie and your family that they may all be supported and up fail at this time and days to come.
Bless you
