Gary Gerdes Obituary

POTTSBORO - Gary Dean Gerdes, 75, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2013, in the presence of his loving family.

Gary was born Oct. 29, 1937 in Tulia. He was the son of Emmett C. Gerdes and Margaret Cleta Payne Gerdes.

Gary dedicated his life to law enforcement. He began at an early age as a police dispatcher in Tulia, and quickly moved up to chief of police in Clarendon. After 10 years, he moved on to sheriff's deputy in Tulia. While there he became sheriff and served two terms before retiring to Pottsboro. After being retired a short while, he decided to return to law enforcement and finished his career as a campus police officer at Grayson College.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Minnie Mansell Gerdes; one loving son, Bobby Darrel Gerdes and wife Diane Gerdes of Pottsboro; one loving daughter, Cathy Dee Ann Gerdes Downtain and Donnie Snider of Pottsboro; five fantastic grandchildren, Diana Spring Gerdes, Bobby Jay Gerdes, Zachary David Downtain, Joshua Tate Downtain and Danielle Rene Downtain; and three beautiful great-granddaughters, Madison Payton Gerdes, Natalie Page Gerdes, and Kelsey Raylan Vrawley, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gary was preceded in death by his mother and father, Emmett and Cleta Gerdes; and daughter-in-law, Deborah Fowler Gerdes.

Family night was Tuesday evening at American Family Serves in Denison. A celebration of Gary's life will be held with graveside services at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013. at Hagerman Cemetery, Pottsboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Grayson County Home Hospice in memory of Gary, would be greatly appreciated.

So sorry for your lose. I remember playing bingo with him and Minni at Flamingo. He was a very fine man.
