LYZETTE HEALANI BARKLEY
Lyzette Healani Barkley, age 78, of Denison, Texas, passed away peacefully at her residence on September 22, 2025.
Born February 16, 1947, to Herschel Chenoweth and Hannah Olsen, Lyzette grew up in Waialua, Hawaii, surrounded by the warmth and beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. She attended Kamehameha High School, graduating in 1965, then moved to Texas where she attended Texas Christian University, and met her future husband Ronald the first week on campus! She double majored in English and Spanish, graduating from TCU in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Ronald and Lyzette were married at Kawaiaha'o Church in Honolulu, Hawaii on June 6, 1970, eventually settling in Denison, Texas with their growing family.
Known for her warm personality, gift of conversation, and ability to connect with anyoneLyzette NEVER met a stranger. Her selfless spirit touched countless lives as she poured her energy and love into her family, friends, and church community. She was an avid sewist and was known for her legendary quilts, often giving them as gifts. She loved traveling to her grandchildren's robotics and basketball competitions. She enjoyed reading, writing and watching Spanish telenovelas with her life-long best friend, Karen Tanaka. After her own children were grown, one of her true passions was mentoring young men in the community. She cherished her AAU basketball players (Borg, IOCB) alongside her husband and dear friends, Mark and Tasha Ellison. Recently, she and Ronald marked the 60th anniversary of their first date on September 17th.
Lyzette is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 55 years, Ronald Barkley; her sons John (Lori) and Andrew (Ruth Ann); her grandchildren Katherine, Reagan, Mary Anna, Nolan, and Julia; her sister Susan (Ron) Carlsward; and her brother Guy (Gina) Chenoweth. She was preceded in death by her parents and older brother Herschel Chenoweth.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Denison, Texas, on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. (Rosary preceding the Mass at 8:30 a.m.). Lyzette's legacy of love, kindness, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
