Robert Garrett Obituary

Robert Neal Garrett was born May 11, 1942, to Homer D. and Addine (Riggs) Garrett in Bridgeport, TX. He transferred from this life to heaven on September 22, 2016.

Robert graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1960. He married his high school sweetheart, Jo Linda (Giles) Garrett in 1963, and they had 53 loving years together. After a few years working in the oil field and at a rock crusher, he began working for Texas Power and Light (then TU Electric) in 1965. After working for more than 32 years in Sherman, Decatur, Mineral Wells, and Euless, he retired in 1997. After retirement, Robert and Jo Linda moved to Lake Texoma to enjoy lots of fishing. He had a great love for the Lord Jesus, was a deacon at church, and taught children's Sunday school for many years; he had been a member of the Optimist Club, and was currently a member of Gideons International. For more than 20 years, he was a football referee for pee-wee, junior high, and high school. In retirement, he volunteered at Texoma Medical Center for many years. He deeply loved his family, friends, and children. He was known for his outgoing personality, sense of humor often found in pranks and practical jokes, and his love to laugh. He was a great friend and fun classmate. Everyone wanted to be around him because he loved them unconditionally. He was an amazing husband, loving father and PaPaw, and his passing will leave a void that cannot be filled.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Linda, three sons, Barry and Alyssa Garrett of Decatur, TX, Monte and Tricia Garrett of Weatherford, TX, and Scott Garrett of Palm Desert, CA; five grandsons, Wilson, Jackson, Giles, Anderson, and Elliott; one sister, Martha Gray of McKinney, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Homer D. and Addine, two brothers, David and Sam, nephew Michael Morin; father- and mother-in-law, J. E. and Alma Faye Giles; sisters-in-law Sue Rowe and Nelda Lambert; and brother-in-law Jimmie Hefner.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 25, 2016 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Bratcher Funeral Home.

Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m., Monday, September 26, 2016, at Parkside Baptist Church in Denison, Texas with Dr. Craig Canton and Dr. Jerry Coffman officiating.

Burial will be at 3 p.m., Monday, September 26, 2016, at Thomas Cemetery in Bridgeport, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International or the building fund for the ROC at Parkside Baptist Church, Denison.

Not sure what to say?

October 5, 2016

I have known Robert for several years and have enjoyed his company very much. He was a good role model for others and just a joy to be around. Most of my contact with him was as a Gideon . He was a good leader and helped me in many ways. He was always at our prayer breakfast and always up-beat and though we knew he had many health issues, his focus was on others. We knew that he loved to volunteer at the ROC and at the hospital and we knew that he loved his family deeply and his faith was in Jesus Christ. We will miss him.

Gloria and I will miss Robert at the ROC on Saturday mornings, when we would go in to exercise. He always had a hi and a smile. He will be missed by many Parkside members such as ourselves. What a good Christian man and a friend of children. Jesus would say of Robert, "Well done, thy good and faithful servant".

We've known Robert & Jo Linda since 1965 and we love them and all their family. We will miss Robert. He was a really great friend. We are in prayer for Jo Linda and family. They are more like family than friends. Love to all.

As one of Robert's classmate's sine 1954 (and Jo Linda also for my wife Betty), we have enjoyed many good times with both of them. We have laughed much with them, both at the 50th Class of BHS High School reunion at Pat's home on the lake in Bowie (where a lot of the class wound up with Red faces) and most recently at our ALL Class Reunion (20 yrs of classes) last September. We all sat around a big table after the Reunion was over, talked about old times and Laughed a lot. Little did we know that Sammy (who was there) would be gone in days. Robert we will miss you and certainly the team of Robert/Jo Linda. Another hole in our hearts to tuck away untile we meet again.

Thinking of you Monte on losing your dear father. He sounded like such a wonderful person. Wesley and I started our life in that area. We taught school in Sherman, he was organist at First Baptist Church and later choir director, two children born there and often drove to Denison for dinner and to Lake Texoma for fun. Lots of memories! Prayers for you and your family. Love, Elaine

We have fond memories of you during our time in Mineral Wells...in church, in our home, and in yours as well. We know that your Hope is in Christ Jesus. Our prayers are with you. Sam and Ruth Lynn Cotter
