Al, Alfredo, Guido, and more. Whatever name you knew him by he was always the life of the party, with a big personality, a great laugh, and a big heart.
Al was born in Everett, was a graduate of Everett High, went on to University of Puget Sound for a degree in Occupational Therapy and later his MBA from University of San Fransisco.
He spent the first third of his life working with and for special needs individuals around the country spending time in Montana, California, Washington DC & Washington State.
Later in his life he switched gears using his keen interest in wine and his desire to own his own business by opening a wine cellar called "Bacchus Wines" in downtown Everett. Customers wanted something to enhance their wine selections so, "The Back Door Deli" was soon added expanding the uptown storefront. A new venture followed soon with a full-service restaurant on the Everett waterfront, "Bacchus by the Bay". Bacchus by the Bay closed its doors in 1993 requiring Al to begin yet a third chapter.
He took a position with the German Retirement Home in Kirkland cooking for the residents. He convinced the grounds keeper to put in an herb section in the garden and learned each resident's favorite cookie so he could surprise them with treats on special occasions.
Later his love of cooking and good wine landed him at "Trader Joes" which is where he retired from in 2002,
He and his wife of twenty years, Maria, finally took time to travel and lived in La Paz, Mexico for several years. They eventually decided to settle into King City, a retirement community, in SW Portland where he made lots of new friends and took up gardening and birding.
Al leaves his wife Maria, 5 children from his first marriage, Kay (Randy), Tony, Kim (Dan), Vince and Kristen (John) 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 2 great/great grandchildren as well as Maria's daughters, Diana (Dan), Dawna, Dayna (Peter), Nikki (Thomas) 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren.
Al was one of a kind and will be missed by all that knew him.
A celebration of his life will be held August 13th at 2PM - 4PM, 5700 Parkside DR., Marysville, WA at the home of Randy and Kay Frederickson-Kolb

I knew Al when he worked as a facility specialist for the Calif. Dept. of Rehabilitation in the 1970-80´s. I opened two sheltered workshops and he arranged grants to open our second facility. He and I sailed my sailboat off central California and enjoyed many great times together which I remember fondly as I see photos of us together on down-wind sailing.....I can email photos of "Alfredo" as I called him....an exceptional renaissance friend....

Al was my supervisor when I began working in the Department of Rehabilitation in California. Al was highly respected in the Rehab community and was known throughout the State for his knowledge and ability in developing quality in the programs that served individuals with disabilities. Al was a great mentor and teacher and was instrumental in guiding my 26 year career in the DOR. Rest In Peace my friend.
