Art Armstrong was born in San Francisco, CA. He graduated from Everett High School and went on to serve in the Navy and the Army. Art was a graduate of the University of Washington. He went on to work for Northwestern Mutual Insurance where he met the love of his life, Janet (Hossfeld) and they were married over 65 years. Art owned Gilkey-Armstrong Insurance in Everett. He served as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Washington and also as a state representative in Washington, DC.
Art was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Everett Rotary Club, Navy League, Elks Club, Bethany of the Northwest and the Everett Yacht Club. He was an avid sailor, enjoyed traveling with his wife Janet, Bridge Club, snow skiing and spending time on Whidbey Island fishing and crabbing with his family and friends.
Art is survived by his family: wife Janet, children Linda (Carl) Varner and Steve (Cindy) Armstrong. Grandchildren Scott (Ashley) Varner, Andrea Varner, Rachel (Aaron) VanGorkom, and great grandchildren Madison, Jack, Tyler and Bennett. He was a wonderful husband, dad, grandfather and great grandfather.
Art will be dearly missed by family and friends but our memories of him will live on. A special thank you to Shoreline Health & Rehab for the excellent care they provided to Art.
A private service for the immediate family will be at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to the Navy League of Everett or the Alzheimer's Association in Lynnwood, WA.

I am an old friend and associate of Art Armstrong. I live in Washington D.C. and am no longer in the insurance industry. I just learned of his passing. I worked with Art in the late 1980s at the Independent Insurance Agents of Washington as his Government Affairs staffer.
I had great respect for Art his leadership and contribution to the industry. I had the good fortune to work with him and travel to Washington DC to attend the State National Directors meetings and IIABA's National Legislative Conference.
Later I was hired as the Chief state lobbyist by the National Association overseeing litigation, regulation and legislation in all fifty states.
Over the years I gave presentations in all fifty states and testifyed before twenty five plus state legislatures. When things got tough as they often did during testimony or debate I would ask myself who am I representing? I would always picture Art in my mind as the competent, caring mainstreet Independent Insurance agent and the incredible value he provided his clients. That thought never failed in helping bring clarity and gravitas to my remarks. I learned so much working for Art those many years ago.
I just wanted to share with you the positive impact he had on me.
My condolences to your family.

I was saddened to read of Art's passing. We first met at Our Savior's Lutheran over 50 years ago. We worked together on several church and Rotary projects over the years. Art was first class in every way. My deepest sympathy is extended to Janet and the entire family.
