Edward Morrow Obituary

July 27, 1934 -

November 25, 2022

Ed Morrow died on November 25, 2022, after a life of service to his beloved Everett. The son of Mary Lou and Edward Morgan Morrow, Ed spent the first years of his life in Bellingham, Washington. At age 10 he moved to Everett with his mom and brother Bob, growing up in a house just a block from the hospital where his life ended.

Ed was truly an "Everett (High) man," lettering in basketball and golf at Everett High. He went on to graduate from Everett Community College, followed by Western Washington University where he received both a Bachelor and Masters degree in Education.

Ed began his career teaching at Whittier Elementary; he was later the principal of five elementary schools and one middle school in the Everett School District. Many fondly recall the giant St. Bernard, Alex, who accompanied Ed to school each day. He received several state PTA awards and represented one school when it received national recognition for excellence. Another highlight was planning for the district's new Woodside Elementary School which included a district first - a covered play area. He also helped start the district's Community School program.

Ed was the father of two sons, Scott and Todd Morrow. Summers meant camping trips with the boys. Ed also enjoyed woodcarving and teaching others how to carve, as well as golfing at Legion Memorial.

After retiring, Ed served two terms on the Everett City Council and one term as a Port of Everett Commissioner. He was proud of his successful work to add fluoride to the City's water.

Following his marriage to Elizabeth (Betty) Morrow, he acquired the family beach cabin on Samish Island. Ed and Betty enjoyed their summers there, and the friendships and fun they had with their beach neighbors.

The last chapter of Ed's life was focused on local history and historic preservation. Ed and Betty restored an historic home and a small downtown office building, later ensuring that both would be used to benefit the people of Everett.

Ed is survived by his wife Betty and her son Rob Cole, as well as Ed's son Todd Morrow. He was preceded in death by his brother Bob Morrow and Ed's son Scott Morrow.

At Ed's request there will be no memorial service.

It was a great privilege to work with Ed on the fluoridation campaign. He was amazing in his ability to encourage all our committee and of course he was most politically astute. We miss him and his good thoughts and idea

I had the good fortune to have Ed as my principal while teaching at Jefferson Elementary during the '71 - '73 school years. He was always supportive, respectful and kind to all. In my memory is lots of wood carvings and Alex, the school dog. I often saw students taking Alex for his daily walk. It often looked like Alex was taking the child for a walk! I was so sad to hear of his passing. He left his mark on Everett and we are grateful.
Thanks for all the hard work and memories, Ed. It was a job well done.

Ed was my principal at Monroe Elementary for several years in the Everett School District. I will always remember his great sense of humor, love of working with children, and leadership as a building principal. Ed liked to joke with his staff too. My best memory was his putting a sign on my first new car that I drove to school. Ed got a large poster board, printed in large letters, "Honk of you like my new car!" and taped it onto the hood of my new car! I had no idea it was on the front bumper! People kept honking at my car when I left work! I saw it when I got home. The next day, I learned Ed had placed it on my front bumper. I thought that was really funny. He was like that. Always trying to cheer up the staff. I loved working for him. A supportive principal, cared about his students and staff. Loved animals, and class pets. I also had Ed at Western Washington University one summer while he instructed a course on campus. It was with sorrow I read about Ed's passing. May he rest in peace. Ed will be missed and I will never forget him.

Ed hired me to teach 4th grade at Monroe Elementary School, in Everett School District. This was my first job back in my hometown. Ed loved people and animals. I remember his kindness, jokes, support for his staff, and pleasure being an educational leader. I was also fortunate to have Ed as an adjunct professor one summer, up at Western Wa. University, where he once again demonstrated a love for teaching. A one of a kind gentle, fun, person, who will be dearly missed by the education community. Rest in peace Ed. I so enjoyed working with you in the Everett School District.

I was the second Band Director at Eisenhower Middle School when Ed became the principal. He would come into the band room just to listen to any of the bands or orchestra classes and then let the students know how much he appreciated them. He was always supportive
of the music program and me. His support wasn't limited to just the music program but all of the teachers and students in the school. I and the concert band had the honor of playing "Alexanders Ragtime Band"for the televised by King TV for the celebration of Ed's Alex

Ed, along with his wife and my former colleague Betty, was truly a gift to Everett. His many activities, over his lifetime, have benefited the city and its citizens and is a wonderful and lasting legacy to be remembered and honored. His always friendly manner will be remembered by all of us who knew him, and will be a good and gracious guide for us all. I will miss him and his friendship. I am definitely a better person for having known him. My heart goes out to Betty, his equally loving and giving partner. Everett is a better place because of them both. This is a difficult good bye.

Dear Betty & Todd, We are saddened by the death of Ed. You three have been part of our lives --whether by association with Civic Music, Everett Symphony, Housing Hope, & other charitable works. I remember fondly helping with receptions in your lovely home, & elsewhere, & having Ed give me a tour of his wonderful carved artwork. You all will be remembered as stars in Everett! Love & hugs, Jeannie (& Alan "Lanny") Lish
