Grant Haller Obituary

December 2, 1944 - July 26, 2017 Grant M. Haller was an artist, adventurer and master storyteller. His medium was photography. He was born in 1944 just outside of London, U.K., and lived a long, wonderful life in the Pacific Northwest. Surrounded by family, Grant died in Edmonds, Washington, on July 26, 2017. He was 72 years old. Grant is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary; his children, Patrick, Shelby and Rory; grandchildren, Kelsey, Miler, Connor, Austin and Noah; great grandchild, Blake; and sister, Mickey Erickson, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Newspapers and photography were Grant's passions. He was a graduate of Queen Anne High School and the University of Washington, and a tireless director and promoter of the National Press Photographers Association. Grant worked for the Everett Herald, The Seattle Times and The Seattle Post Intelligencer (P.I.). He was a photojournalist for over 30 years at the P.I., where he captured and shared the photographic stories of life in the Northwest. Grant was aptly described as "the greatest storyteller in a house full of storytellers". The family is planning a public memorial service to celebrate Grant's life and work in fall 2017. Grant was a very kind gentleman to me when I was a boy. I am Grant's cousin and I stayed with him and his family when I was a boy coming from London, England. I was lucky enough to actually go with him on assignment to a forest fire, I will never forget that spectacular trip and especially the kindness that he and his family showed me.
He was a lovely, kind man and I would dearly love to catch up with my cousin's Shelby and co. I hope they are all keeping well.

My father in Seattle sent me a Seattle P.I. photo of the Olympics with downtown in the foreground when I was in school in Bellingham. He knew I loved those mountains. I have saved the pic all these years and now wish to do a painting based on this photo for my niece's wedding present. Thought I should look for the photographer and ask permission, just to be polite. This obit came up. He looks like quite a character! I often look at this newspaper clipping, with fond memories of the beautiful views I grew up with, and the many long backpacking trips as I got older.

I did not know Mr. Haller, but I received a photograph of my father in 1972 prior to his Olympic win with Mr. Haller's name stamped on the back. The photograph is beautiful and brings tears to my eyes. I wanted to reach out to Mr. Haller and thank him personally. I have seen many professional photos of my father but, this is the 2nd one I've seen that makes me emotional. What a truly talented artist!

My condolences to Mr. Haller's family and friends

He was the genuine article. Abundant talent, the eye of an artist and the heart of an open hearth plus always a wink of whimsy. It was a privilege to work with Grant. Susan Paynter

So long Grant. I'll imagine you now traveling somewhere else in one of those interstellar space vehicles you used to like to talk about. Sorry you had to leave too soon

Grant... it was swell sharing 50 years of photography and friendship with you. Did you get a good shot of the Gates of Heaven as you entered?
