James Abbey Obituary

If you could sum up the life of Jim Abbey in one word, it would be service. He served as a Boy Scout in his youth, achieving Eagle Scout. He served our country as a member of the Airforce. He served the Railroad his entire career, whether it was called the Great Northern, Burlington Northern, or BNSF. He served his family as a dedicated son, brother, husband, father, and uncle. He served his church as a leader and volunteer, board member, storyteller, youth leader, and all-around light to the congregation. He served his community as a volunteer at the foodbank and high-volume chef for various community events and church gatherings. He served humanity with his undying acceptance and love for all walks of life, always finding the light when others focused on the dark. He served his wife and kids with a shining example of unconditional love and respect, along with the patience and understanding to allow his family to be independent while always being available in times of need.

Perhaps his biggest example of patience and understanding, was his never-ending love for the Seattle Mariners. There was seldom a Seattle sports game played, that wasn't viewed by Jim. He was quick to share a stat or an anecdote about any player on the field. A real fan through and through.

Jim loved to cook! Even more, he loved watching people enjoy the food he made, oftentimes not serving himself until making sure everyone else was happily stuffing their faces. He also loved trips to Mexico, camping in the Methow Valley, and a good game of cribbage or pinochle.

If you have ever met Jim, you are a better person for it. His silent bouncy laugh was infectious. His smile and hugs washed away sadness. The example that he set by his actions reached near and far.

Jim is survived by his wife Judy, his children Josh and Jenna, his five brothers, and his trusted pup Hannah. He is also survived by his many cousins, nieces, nephews, and many non-blood related people who consider Jim family.

May he rest in peace, and may he look down from his final resting place and see all the fruits of his life of service.

The memorial service will be delayed until we can all be together to celebrate Jim's life. Memorials in Jim's name can be sent to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Please visit www.jmabbey.com for information on the service and memorials, share your memories of Jim, and get on the mailing list so we can let you know when the memorial service is scheduled.

Dear Judy,,
We were so sorry to read of Jim's passing. He and you were the best neighbors. Back in the day he got me (Judy) out of more than a couple predicaments--always kind and with a little twinkle in his eye. He will be missed. May Jim's Memory be Eternal.
