Kenneth Robinson Obituary

Kenneth Douglas Robinson passed away on Friday, June 19, 2015 at his home in Snohomish, Washington at the age of 84. He was born to Mary Luella and Homer Robinson on March 3, 1931 in Pasadena, California. He graduated from Occidental College in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and later attended San Francisco Theological Seminary where he obtained a Bachelor of Divinity. On June 12, 1955 he married Margaret (Marianna) Jean Merriam in Glendale, California. He began his career as a Presbyterian minister at Grandview Presbyterian church in Glendale, later serving churches in Onalaska, Washington and in Corcoran and Burbank, California. In 1973 Ken and his family moved to Snohomish, where he served the First Presbyterian Church for fourteen years. After retiring from parish ministry he worked as a counselor for the Presbyterian Counseling Service. Ken was loved and honored by his family. He cherished relationships with family and friends as well as those he served in the ministry. He particularly valued friendships with the Cuban, Ugandan, Viet-namese and Cambodian refugees his churches sponsored throughout the life of his ministry. He had an inquiring intellect and often sought the company of new ideas. He was a reader and a studier, taking energy and inspiration from subjects ranging from poetry to the cosmos. He was a traveler who addressed life as an adventure. At the age of 50 he purchased a motorcycle and made many happy expeditions into other states, camping under the stars and following where his imagination lead. He had an abiding love and respect for nature and was a generous provider for the hummingbirds, blue jays and squirrels that visited his deck. He had a quick wit and loved bantering with his friends. His five grand-children were always the best audience for his jokes. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marianna Robinson and by his brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Clara Robinson of Medford, Oregon. He is also survived by his children, Laurie Robinson of Snohomish, Jennifer Robinson of Snohomish, Tina and Martin Johnson of Sitka, Alaska, Ross Robinson and Drew Smith of Bainbridge Island, Washington. He is survived by grandchildren, Hannah Sharpe, Amon and Megan Johnson, Jenner Johnson, Haley Robinson and Claire Robinson. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Snohomish. The family requests attendees bring a small bouquet from their garden to decorate the front of the sanctuary. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Snohomish with a designation for the Life Abundant Program in Cameroon.

Blessings. Ken was my first pastor many many years ago in Corcoran. I lost touch. His wife my Sunday School teacher. His children my friends. Ken is responsible for leading me to Christ. Although not always the best at staying close to Christ the foundation set by Ken has always been with me. Thank you Ken. May the Good Shepard comfort each of you during this journey.

Ken become a friend and mentor for me when I arrived in North Puget Sound Presbytery in June of 1975. Over the years he was a devoted and loving friend when I was widowed and during all the years I was pastor of Cascade View Presbyterian Church. My last wonderful memory of Ken is at my retirement party in 2013 as he hosted and led the laughter and "jokes" to transition me into being retired. Ken's life, deep caring, and humility reassure me that God loves us all and that on earth our life has only just begun. Thank you Ken for being Christ's faithful and patient servant thru your final breath. Your life is God's love incarnate. Till we meet again... Rev. Bob Higgins

Memories of high school, college and seminary flooded my mind as I learned of Ken's passing. Those treasures will still make me smile for a long, long time. Blessings on the whole family.

May the peace of Christ surround you all and know that our prayers are with you. A gentle man with a heart for everyone. Thank you for the privilege of knowing you and being a small part of that remarkable life.

I knew Ken because his son, Ross, was my dear high school friend. Hanging out at their house and feeding ducks at the lake, Ken was, to me, simply Ross' dad. A nice guy who didn't mind random people in his house. As high school and teenage pressures marched on, Ross invited me to attend church with him. From that first service began the only time in my life-to-date that I have attended regularly. Ken led the first sunrise service I had ever been a part of and these many years later those short moments remain a true underpinning of who I am. During those wonderful yet trying years of figuring my teenage self out, Ken was the easiest person in the world to talk to. like all the greats in somebody's life, you don't know they are giving it to you while they are giving it to you. I got to thank Ken, once, for what he had given back then. I thanked him on the day he married my husband and me, twenty-five years ago. In times between, Ken eased the grief for my family and countless others as we lost people we didn't know we had the strength to lose. His steadiness as he spoke on those occasions was such a gift, as if you could lean your grief against him for a minute if you needed to. For his family, I hope knowing how many lives were strengthened and aided by Ken will ease at least a small part of his passing. And, Ross, thank you for inviting me to church.

As much as I was truly saddened to hear of Pastor Robinson's passing, I am filled with joy and love at the memories I have of him. At a time in my life when I needed true counseling and support, he stepped up without needing to be asked and helped my mother and me immeasurably. Pastor Robinson's demonstration of Christian love remains as a goal for me to achieve in my dealings with family, friends, and especially strangers.

I'm sorry I won't be able to attend the memorial service in person, but please know I'm there in spirit.
