Larry Buchan Obituary

Larry Lloyd Buchan

Larry Lloyd Buchan passed away peacefully after an extended illness on March 23, 2012.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Ann; his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Jenine Buchan; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Brian McMahan; and daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Jake Mitchell. He also leaves behind his grand-children he so dearly loved, Chris Buchan, Kelli (Kent) Bergsagel, Brittany and Tyler McMahan, Grace and Claire Mitchell. He was able to meet his first great-grandchild, Conrad Bergsagel. He is also survived by brothers, Brian and Lyle Buchan.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd Buchan and Freida Armbruster; and sister, Vivian Ellison.
Larry was born in Baker, OR on September 30, 1932. He grew up in Eastern Oregon and joined the Navy upon graduation from high school. After serving four years in the Navy he went on to earn his journeyman plumbing license. He spent many years working in southern California as a journeyman plumber.
He married the love of his life, MaryAnn, in 1956. They raised their family in Bellflower, CA until 1979 when they moved to Everett, WA to own and operate the local Baskin-Robbins stores. Starting with two stores in 1979, the family grew their business to four stores and still operate one today.
In 1982, Larry took a job with the city of Everett and worked as a plumbing inspector until his retirement in 1998. He enjoyed many years of gardening, tinkering in the garage and short vacations with MaryAnn. Affectionately known as Larry, Mr. B, or Papa, his energy was infectious wherever he went.
He will be deeply missed by his family, especially at regular Sunday dinner gatherings.
A celebration of Larry's life will be held at St. John's Catholic Church in Mukilteo on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. A private internment ceremony will be held at a later date at Tahoma National Military Cemetery.

When I was 15 my first job was at Baskin-Robbins on 41st, Mr.B was a very kind man, always had a smile on his face when he stopped in. My prayers are with Him and his family.

I am so sorry for your loss of such a kind, friendly man. I worked at CostCutter and StockMarket foods where Larry often came in and bought bananas for his ice-cream stores. He always joked that he had a monkey, gorilla, or that he bought Baskin and Robbins stores to put his kids to work when they couldn't find a job. When my husband and I bought our first home, there came Larry the water inspector. He was such a nice guy and always had a smile on his face and loved to laugh. He will be missed for sure! I haven't worked in the grocery business for over 13 years, but nice customers like Larry you don't forget. My deepest sympathies to the family, but what a blessing to have had him on this earth.

My first time to meet Larry was at a house that his daughter Cindy was sharing with my wife Sharron and their good friend Janet. A family van pulled up in the driveway and out piled the entire Buchan family after one of their many family outings. The one thing I will always remember was the laughter and love that came from that van as the entire family got out to say hi. Larry "Lar" was the perfect example of what it meant to be a "family man." His laughter and kindness will be greatly missed.

Some of the joy and love of Larry & MaryAnn

Too soon a departure for a great guy. He leaves a legacy of a great family, fond memories, and a genuinely positive (and tolerant) impact on many lives and multiple generations. I am fortunate to have known him.

My condolenses to the Buchan family. I worked for him well going through college. My favorite memory of Mr. B was him delivering milk and bananas to his stores. I always enjoyed seeing his smiling face at Costco. He will be missed.

Our condolences to the Buchan family. Mr. & Mrs. B were so good to the young people they employed at the B & R stores, accommodating their school and sports schedules and teaching them to balance work schedules and other life activities. Forever grateful for them being a part of young people's lives.
