Mildred Kirkpatrick Obituary

Mildred S. Kirkpatrick

Mildred Dorothy Simmons Kirkpatrick, 96, died quietly in the evening of July 8, 2013 with her daughter-in-law by her side. She was born on April 19, 1917, in Spokane, Washington, the daughter of George Herbert and Mamie Dunker Simmons , and had two sisters, Audrey Lois (Scollard) and Norma Marie Simmons, and one brother, Harold Edward Simmons (Sullivan).
Mildred was a woman of strength and determination, who, after being orphaned at age fifteen, went on to earn her Bachelor's of Arts Degree (1939) at Whitworth College and a Teaching Certificate and Bachelor's Degree in Education (1940) from Washington State College. In 1975, she earned a Master's Degree in Education from Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia. She strove for teaching excellence throughout her teaching career, which included teaching high school English and counseling in Wilson Creek High School, Wenatchee High School, and in the Macon, Georgia, schools.
In 1941, Mildred married Hugh C. Kirkpatrick, also from Spokane, Washington. They had three children, Bonnie L. Kirkpatrick, Brian T. Kirkpatrick, and
Georgene K. Jacobs. She was a much loved Grandma to seven, four grand-daughters and three grandsons; and Great Grandma to eight, five boys and three girls. She also leaves four loved nieces and two nephews.
During her life, Mildred was drawn to help others, including children who were orphaned as she was. She loved drawing and painting, which she took up very successfully in her later years. She was active in the Episcopal Church, and had attended St. Andrew's in Spokane, St. Luke's in Wenatchee, and St Francis' in Mill Creek.
Her family is planning a private memorial.

It was sad to read of Mildred's passing, yet we know she loved her God, and surely, she is now in Heaven with Hugh and Jesus, her Savior. We were members together with them at St. Francis Episcopal Church, during the latter 1980's and the latter 1990's. We appreciated and were encouraged by the special care and leadership support that Mildred gave to our congregation. Thank you Lord for our lives together!

Hi Bonnie
Your Mom is the last of the St Lukes Couples Club to leave us. They all had fun together. I was talking about Mildred today before I got Jan's email informing me of Mildred's passing(my wife was an English teacher, also).Wenatchee was a great place to grow up and I am glad that our families were there at the same time.
My deepest sympathies,
Dick DIllow

Bonnie, so very sorry to hear of your mother's passing. Our moms go way back with St. Luke's and their dedication and love of church and family. Blessings and my deepest sympathy to you and your family.

So sorry to hear of Mildred's passing. We knew her and her husband Hugh while at St. Francis, and they were neighbors of ours "up the hill" in Mukilteo. What a lovely lady - now at peace after a long and full life.
