Seth Cowan Obituary

Seth Jr. Cowan

Seth Jr. Cowan, of Snohomish, WA, died August 17, 2008, at Providence General Hospital after a lengthy illness. Seth was born in 1926 in Missouri to parents, Lela and Seth Cowan. He spent his childhood in Texas and Missouri.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Thelma, at home; his son, Glenn, of Anchorage, Alaska; his daughter, Terri and husband, Fred Claymore, of Everett; brother, Billie J. Cowan, of Mossyrock, WA; grandchildren, Stephan Claymore, Mike Claymore and wife, Dorothy, of Lake Stevens, WA, Jay Cowan, of Arizona, and Blake Cowan, of Alaska. He was blessed with great-grandsons, Mitchell and Nicholas Claymore, of Lake Stevens,
Seth was preceded in death by his parents, Lela and Seth Cowan; and his much loved daughter-in-law, Janelle Cowan.
He was an original "unforgettable" character with a genuine smile and ready friendship for everyone he came in contact with. He never met a stranger and welcomed many into his home and life. Seth grew up in a time where a man kept his word and was honest, and he never forgot those things that make a person truly a man among men. He left home at 14 to join the Navy and Merchant Marines. He loved nature, the woods and enjoyed hunting. Some of his most treasured memories were of trips; fishing in Alaska with Glenn and his family, and hunting and fishing trips with friends. He loved his garden and was looking forward to harvesting his tomatoes this year and sharing his crop with those he loved. He enjoyed laughter and his smile and warmth were qualities treasured by many who will never forget him. He loved horses, animals, and children. He played like a child and treated everyone as a friend. He was creative and loved to tell and hear a good story. He sang and danced and was a true poet with his little tales and songs. He overcame many hardships that life handed him with dignity and humility. He loved his family above everything and with all his heart, and relished in each goal and achievement of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a friend to many and could be counted to be there for anyone with anything they needed. He was a cowboy and was proud of his Texas roots. There will never be a more loved, respected and admired person in our lives. He will be missed and grieved by his special "chosen family" of sons and daughters; brothers and sisters; as well as his birth family.
Our special thanks to the ICU Staff of Providence General Medical Team at Colby Campus. They treated Seth with love and compassion in his final days and gave great comfort to all of us.
No services are planned at Seth's request.

Dear Thelma, Terri, and Glenn

So many years have passed since I last saw you. Perhaps I was just a child at the time but my parents (Claude and Betty Boober) always spoke so highly of Seth. I was sorry to hear of his passing. Please know that you are in my thoughts as you go through the difficult days ahead. You were so blessed to have him in your life and with his death may many more blessings come your way as you cherish and share in the special memories he left for you.

Deepest sympathy,
Bill and Anita (Boober) Welch

Thelma,
Thank you for the friendship you and Junior shared with me and Woody all these years. Some of the happiest times I ever had were times spent in your company. The laughs we shared, the meals we shared and the good times spent watching our families grow will forever be in my heart. Woody and I could not have asked for better people to call our best friends. We both love you and your whole family so very much and if there is anything I can do to help you through this time please let me. I love you with all my heart!

As a young girl I would get so excited when I saw Jr and Thelma's familiar car pull in the driveway for a surprise visit. It always meant our house would be full of laughter, I would get to hear Junior's stories, and I'd get to spend time with the first cowboy I ever loved. When it was my turn to go to Jr. and Thelma's house he let me pretend that he kept his horses just for me and those lazy afternoons at his house were like paradise to me. As an adult I began to appreciate just how genuine and wonderful my cowboy really was. My Dad, Woody, thought the world of Junior and loved him very much. When my Dad died many years ago, Junior seemed like a connection between my fond memories of my childhood and my Dad. Somehow everytime I saw Jr or thought of him, the pain of losing Dad hurt a little less. Thank you Thelma for being a part of our lives all these years and for making my memories such warm ones, and thank you God for connecting our family to the Cowan's family here on earth. Jr, I hope you have some new stories to share with my dad now that you are together again because I'm sure he's got some new jokes to lay on you....

Seth will greatly be missed by all who have gotten the pleasure of knowing him. When we think of him we will automatically smile for years to come. Because his smile is that contagious. He was such a kind person always thinking of others (just like my dad) always bringing things to my mom and dad out of his garden, pickles, relishes and other wonderful things. My dad would always say "here try this" I was always relunctant not knowing where he got it from. Then he would say "Seth made it" Then I knew that it was going to be good. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.

Terri and I have been getting a lot of calls of condolences and sympathy from family and friends. At the same time I want to return the same thoughts to those callers because I know they have all suffered a loss, too. Seth's family was so much more than that of just blood. He had wonderful friends like Clyde and Richard and Steve and Tote and Laurie and Vickie and Jay and Brandon and Kevin and Dick and Marie and girls and Butch and Pat and Mary and all of the guys at the Outcast and all of the guys at the Old Inn and all of his native friends in Alaska and Missouri and Washington. The list goes on and on and on. Too long to put in an obituary. I just wanted to let you know you are being thought of, too. Seth drove Terri and I up to get our marriage license in September of 1966. I went about messing up our relationship for the next twelve years. The one good thing that came out of that time was Steve and Mike. They loved going out to Grandpa's and Grandma's to ride whatever horse he had and score a second breakfast of bisquits and gravy. In 1982 I was given a second chance by him and have spent the last 26 years showing him how proud I was to be his son-in-law and that he hadn't made a mistake. In our last conversations I was able to tell him again how much I loved him and how much respect I had for him. I know how much the loss of Janelle hurt him and I think the only thing lhat seemed to help was his Grand and Greatgrand kids. He was the true definition of a man and they will carry on his line. Love to all.
