Alex Friedman Obituary

Dr. Alex Friedman, It seems impossible to me that it is over a week since my father, Dr. Alex Friedman, passed away on May 17, 2021. I slowly became his sole caregiver, particularly over the last three and one half years. This is my favorite photograph of him. My father was born on April 10, 1928, the son of an immigrant father from Rashkov, Ukraine and a mother who was a refugee who came here illegally, originally from Belarus. My dad's first language was the Ashkenazi Jewish language of Yiddish; he entered kindergarten at the age of five years not understanding a single word anyone said to him. He had achieved some fluency by Thanksgiving. His sister was three years younger than him and from the time he understood English, he would only speak English to his little sister, Lila, so she would never have to go through what he did. My father's playground was his sidewalk and street in Brooklyn, New York. He and his friends played stick ball, marbles (nuts during the Jewish holidays) and other games of their time. I even have one photo of him holding a broomstick, ready to swing at a ball. He was very bright and talented, completing high school in an accelerated program and going to New York University. He attended Chicago Medical School, did his internship at Queens General Hospital, and his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn. He met my mother, Arlene, on a blind date arranged by his father and they married in 1952. His residency was put on hold for a year when he was sent by the army to Korea. He spent the following year at Fort Meade with my mother and myself, Nancy. We returned to Brooklyn and my brother Jimmy was born. After joining a large practice in Brooklyn and publishing two articles, he decided to move the family to Massachusetts. He worked at the Truesdale Hospital which became Charlton Memorial Hospital. One of his sub-specialties was infertility. He thought the world of the nurses and doctors who were his colleagues. He treasured his staff and his patients. With my mother, he joined the "Gourmet Club," through which he became a part of a group of wonderful friends, all accomplished chefs. He enjoyed running and ran his first marathon at the age of sixty six. He ran two more marathons in his late sixties. He enjoyed traveling, the theater, the ballet and museums, with a passion for collecting art. He loved the New England Patriots. Once retired in 2007 at the age of 79, my father joined various memoir writing groups in both Yiddish and English and was finally able to indulge himself with reading, sometimes up to six hours a day. Just in the last six months of his life, he read most of Ernest Hemingway's work, usually with his dog on his lap. Although he was completely secular and never attended religious services, for two years he and I attended the "Meah" program together; one hundred hours of learning about Jewish history and other related topics. This book-ended with his attending the socialist Yiddish oriented Workmen's Circle "cheder" after school program through his elementary school years. One of my father's greatest joys in life was his grandson, Jair Martin. They spent a lot of time together and some of my father's happiest memories were from the annual summer trips he started taking with his grandson, starting when his grandson was six. As the son of an undocumented immigrant, my father supported HIAS. As an obsterician/ gynecologist, he contributed regularly to Planned Parenthood. As a patient of Care Dimensions "Hospice at Home" for over two years, he gave them regular donations. May his Memory be for a Blessing and may his Soul be bound up in the Bonds of Eternal Life.

I just came across Dr. Friedman´s obituary. I am saddened by his loss but feel so honored to have known him as a professional and privileged that he was also my physician. I first met him when I was a nursing student at Truesdale Hospital. During my student days, I babysat a few times for Nancy & Jimmy-so many years ago. I remember like it was yesterday how kind & caring & compassionate Alex was. As a nurse, I cared for his patients at Truesdale and saw how he equally treated every woman who needed his expertise-he never discriminated. He literally saved my life when a doc in my home town disregarded symptoms I was experiencing.I called Alex,he saw me immediately and I was in surgery the next day. He remained my physician until I moved to CA. I know there are many women who are alive today because of the compassion and expertise of this gifted man. I send my deepest condolences to his family. Please know he made the world a much better, kinder, and safer place for women. May his spirit guide us now toward a better tomorrow.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. He was my mother's doctor and due to religious differences told her he wanted her to get a 2nd opinion before he would do a hysterectomy. Your father was the best Gynecologist I have know in my 46 years ( I was also his patient) Always professional. He asked if I was a runner and I chuckled I didn’t even like driving in a car for 25 miles. He was the best !!! My condolences to you.

What a wonderful obituary to read about a wonderful man who was my doctor and came to my rescue when I needed help. Had broken my wrist, ER orthopedic doctor set it in place and I yelled out in pain. After three days of not being able to sleep and denied painkillers, I called Dr. Friedman begging for a couple painkillers and he immediately did so. The same doctor later performed surgery discovering a nerve was caught in it being set. I will never forget Dr. Friedman’s caring and kindness. RIP, dear man.

I was a patient of Dr. Friedman right up to his retirement. Was a great doctor and such a wonderful person. Loved going into his office after physical. He would take time with every patient to talk about their health issues in a personal setting. He had a beautiful collection of colorful paper weights on his desk. Wonderful memories. Rest in peace Doctor Friedman.

I worked with Dr. Friedman at Truesdale Truesdale Hospital as an RN in Labor and Delivery, and He became my MD, and delivered my second child. I look back fondly on this time in my life because It was one of the best experiences in my Nursing career. He was ahead of His time, when it came to infertility. I witnessed Him caring for patients for 9 months, delivering a healthy infant, to mothers with medical conditions, that were high risk for a healthy pregnancy. Nancy, for You and your family, I am sorry for your loss. Your Dad was a wonderful man, and a great Doctor.

Dear Nancy and family, I’m very saddened to hear of the loss of your Dad. I had been his patient from the age of 18 and he delivered me my wonderful son 45 years ago. I also feel he saved my life when he sent me for a biopsy of my breast. I needed to have a double mastectomy 18 years ago... but here I am. I believe if he wasn’t my doctor and made all the right decisions I might not be here to share my life with my beautiful granddaughter of 18 years.

He will always hold a special place in my heart, but please know that my heart goes out to you. My deepest condolences.

I have wonderful memories of Alex. A truly great human being and a generous and helpful colleague. He was a skilled surgeon and had great enthusiasm for his profession. He maintained a vibrant curiosity and remained current with developments in the field of Ob/Gyn. His favorite OR question was "What am I? Chopped liver?" I can assure you, dear brother, you were far from it. He will be missed by all who knew him. My most sincere condolences to you, Nancy and Jair. Thank you for that moving tribute to Alex.

May 28, 2021

Dr. Friedman delivered my youngest son, Michael J. DeCambra, on June 19. 1978. It was one of the most memorable experiences in my life, as I was all dressed up like Dr. Kildare (showing my age here), nervous, anxious, not knowing what to expect. Dr. Friedman came into the room so relaxed, ushered me into a room where we washed our hands, and he spoke so reassuringly to me. As we left the room, I saw the nurses wheeling my wife's bed into the delivery room. I turned back to the doctor, who was in the process of making me a cup of coffee! Then we started talking about the Red Sox! He was so disarming towards me, that I was completely distracted from all of my anxiety issues. Needless to say, the birthing process went through beautifully, and he immediately congratulated me on the birth of a brand new son (we did not know the gender before birth, so it was even more exciting!) That was almost 43 years ago, and the memory of Dr Friedman, the way he treated me and my wife, his reassurance and compassion, will stay with me forever. May he be in the hearts and minds of everyone he touched. Rest In Peace, Doc...

I was saddened to read about Dr. Friedman's passing. Your tribute was loaded with love and respect and he deserved all of it. I was a patient of your father's until he retired and my mother was his patient until she passed many years ago.I lived 2 blocks down from you on Highland Avenue and saw him running often. Dr. Friedman was a sensitive, caring man who treated all of us with respect. We all thought the world of him. I can honestly say, no one could take his place when he left.
