David Correira Obituary

Atty. David J. Correira, age 62, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at his home in Somerset, Massachusetts. He was a loving husband, father, and papa to two grandsons and eagerly awaiting the birth of his third grandson.
David was born on June 17, 1958 on the U.S. Navy Station in Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada, to Ronald Correira and Rose C. (Kelly) Correira. During his youth, he lived in Louisiana, Germany, Texas, Oklahoma, Fall River, and Canada. David's family moved to Somerset at the start of his freshman year, and he graduated from Somerset High School in 1976. He met his wife and high school sweetheart, Ann, on the school's debate team. They were married 39 years, and together for 45 years.
David practiced law for 31 years, 11 of which were with his son Eric, specializing in trusts and estates. He was a member of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Bars, and former partner at Holland & Knight LLP. David's career achievements were innumerable. He was a respected lawyer who loved to learn, and a prolific writer and teacher who traveled the globe to share his time and talents. His deep and cherished relationships with his clients were the cornerstone of his law practice.
He received his BA from Bridgewater State University in 1980, a Master of Public Administration from the University of Rhode Island in 1984, his JD from New England Law | Boston in 1989, and a Master of Laws from Lazarski University Law School in 2018. He never stopped learning and taught at law schools in Boston and Europe (Lithuania, Latvia, Croatia, Hungary, and Russia). David had plans to teach in Shanghai, China, and was in the process of receiving his third master's degree from the University of London School of Law.
David was active in his community, serving on the Town of Somerset's School Committee and as Town Moderator. He also volunteered as a Scout leader and was a lector, CCD teacher, and eucharistic minister at St. Louis de France in Swansea, MA.
David dedicated his life to supporting his family, providing them with love, friendship, and delicious food. He spent much of his time in the kitchen, perfecting skills he learned from his father, cooking for his family and making every holiday a grand production. Always doing things his way, he stopped at nothing to put on a show. He was a lover of art and theater, which began in high school Drama Club, insisting on seeing a show every time he visited his son Jonathan in New York. He was also passionate about gardening-a constant labor of love-always planning a rotation of blooms in his own personal botanical garden.
Growing up in many different places propelled his interest in the world, something he shared with his family. His love of travel brought them to Europe-London, Paris, and a cruise around the Baltic Sea-and to sunny locations like the Caribbean, Mexico, and Belize. As a family, they often returned to the location of his honeymoon, Walt Disney World. In recent years, David and his wife continued to adventure to places like Costa Rica, Alaska, and Naples, FL. He was a lover of history and found joy in documentaries, historical non-fiction, and researching his ancestry.
David is survived by his wife, Ann M. (Parent) Correira of Somerset, MA; son, Eric D. Correira and wife Allison E. Seitchik of Mansfield, MA; son, Jonathan D. Correira and wife Kristen Everman Correira of Brooklyn, NY; grandsons, Leo S. Correira and Eli S. Correira; and brother, Steven P. Correira of Somerset, MA.
David spent his final hours in his home with his wife and two grandsons, happily baking brownies in the kitchen.
For the safety of David's family, friends, colleagues and clients, a private funeral mass, with livestream, will be held on Monday, July 13, 2020 at 10:00 AM at St. Louis de France in Swansea, MA. Relatives and friends are invited to view the live broadcast at www.hathawayfunerals.com/obituary/DavidJ-Correira.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in David's memory can be made to Bridgewater State University's Bridgewater Fund (www.alumni.bridgew.edu/give) or the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation (www.rls.org/donate-now).

I just heard about David's passing. He was a great guy. I was an industry colleague with David when he was heading up governmental relations at what was then Eastern Utilities (now National Grid). He had more years of experience and I was one of the new guys in the industry in the early 90's, and we developed a friendship as he was always generous with his time and mentoring, to me and others. I recall the CEO of Blackstone Valley Electric, Dave Gulvin, saying "Correira's going to go far." Indeed he did. He had an impeccable reputation and was held in high regard by industry CEO's and colleagues, in political and governmental circles, and with regulatory leadership (PUC,DPU,FERC,EPA, e.g.) alike. He motivated me to get back to grad school and we traded some funny stories about some of the same professors and courses. I recall he was always doing a million things and always a smiling, high achieving, kind, driven, passionate guy and his family was everything to him. To his family, very sorry for your loss.

Sending our deepest sympathies to Ann, Eric and the entire Correira Family. As many have noted, David's passing was so unexpected and leaves a great void for both his family and the legal profession. I first met David years ago as a young lawyer, and he was always full of wisdom and great advice. David was kind and a life long learner. Years later he would complete probate work for both my family and the many friends referred to both him and Eric. What a blessing that he spent his last day with his grandchildren, and what a legacy he leaves behind. David was so proud of working with Eric and I know he will carry on that great legacy. You are in our thoughts during this difficult time.

With Deepest Sympathies, Kara Lucciola and Family

Ed and I would like to express our sincere sympathy for David's passing. The tribute video is beautiful, and it shows how much he loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and life itself. We still remember when David was our son Matt's cub scout troop leader, and when Matt and Jonathan often played together. On one cub scout adventure, Ed remembers sleeping overnight in a tent in your back yard, and having pancakes for breakfast in the morning. David did many great activities with the cub scouts and for the church. You all have so many wonderful memories of him, and as time passes, I know that they will remain there forever to comfort you. God bless!

Dear Ann, Eric, Johnathan and the entire Correira family. Please except our condolences on David's passing. Like many others I was shocked and saddened to hear the news about David. I myself didn't know David as well as Curtis but I
do know that after watching the video I learned very quick what a loving husband, father and grandfather he was. I always enjoyed his Facebook post with photos of his vacations, family and his beautiful garden. He sure lived life to the fullest. We should all be so lucky to accomplish all that David had accomplished.

To Ann, Eric and the entire Correira family...Our profound sympathy to all of you on David's passing....I was stunned to see his name among the recent Herald News postings....We first met David as a young attorney when we were in need of legal advice and he provided us with compassionate and thoughtful counseling. We recently had occasion to meet with he and his son Eric to review and update our estate planning that he was instrumental in developing for us as a young lawyer in early the 1990's. It was a walk for all of us down memory as we sat down with David and son Eric and reminisced on our first serendipitous meeting when my family was in trouble and needed legal help, at a time when Eric was still a youngster. To see them working together as father and son in the same law practice was inspiring.
RIP, David

I have known David for 48 years. Him and I moved to Somerset to enter of our freshman year at Somerset High School. My maiden name was Carreiro, so we sat together in home room. Throughout the years he has been a good friend to myself and my husband Along with my mom and dad. He stuck by his principles whether you agreed or not. A trait I always admired. He also had a huge heart, when he found out I had breast cancer he reached out and sent me flowers and goodies, to quote him to put a smile on my face, as he always pictured me. We send our sympathies to Ann, his sons and their families. He will be missed.Richard and Tammy Lamothe.

First, I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to Ann, Eric and Jonathan and their families. David and I met while commuting to law school. We became fast friends. He had a keen sense of humor, a strong intellectual curiosity and an absolute devotion to Ann and the kids. I am not surprised at all at the level of success and scholarship that he attained. He knew precisely what he wanted and proceeded with alacrity to attain it.
While he was a very busy lawyer, he always made time for our annual RI Attorneys from New England Law luncheon. He loved to regale and complement his colleagues. He will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace David. You left us a too quick but we will remember the good times.

I met David professionally 25 years ago. We shared our Portuguese heritage and legal views. I admired his insatiable desire to learn. He readily shared his knowledge with others and worked earnestly to keep ahead of the the laws of elder law, taxation, trusts and estates. He enjoyed going to foreign lands and excelled in learning and teaching law anywhere. His integrity was not questionable. I am glad that Eric has been well mentored and will carry on. I have known David since he was a teenager. He always worked hard for whatever he planned to achieve. And achieve he did. He joined Diet Workshop, when it was in Somerset, early on. He lost more than 100lbs. and was an inspiration to us. My daughter and I dressed bears one whole year, for all the holidays, that we sent to his clients and some colleagues. He also had us dress cheerleader bears for an event he had when he was running for school committee. One could always ask David for his opinion and advice and get a truthful answer. My husband and I know Ann, she was a neighbor before they were married. As you can see in his obit, he was a lot of wonderful things. He was an educator, served his community and was kind and thoughtful. He was just on My Neighborhood offering seeds to everyone, from his garden that he was so proud of. You left us too soon. RIP Dear David.
