Raymond Dumont Obituary

Raymond A. Dumont, Jr., of Tiverton RI, passed away peacefully in his daughter's Bridgewater home on April 10, 2021. He was born in Fall River, MA to Marie Lapointe Dumont and Raymond A. Dumont, Sr. Ray adored his mother, revered his father, and fiercely loved his predeceased siblings Claire Golembewski, George Dumont, Robert Dumont, and Paul Dumont. He was a loyal and loving big brother to his surviving sisters Jeanne Smith and Dionne Dubree, and valued time with his best friend, Moe Fiola. He is also survived by his older sister, Cecile Michno. Ray proudly served in the United States Air Force Security Service during the Vietnam War, and then graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After teaching at Joseph Case High School, he went on to teach rhetorical theory and business communication at UMass Dartmouth (formerly SMU) as a Professor of English. Ray was most passionate about education and the protection of wildlife. He was most comfortable in front of a classroom, discussing the art of communication with his students. When he wasn't in a classroom, he worked to establish a wildlife preserve on his 35-acre property in Swansea. Though Ray once called Massachusetts, Idaho, Florida, Georgia, and Rhode Island home, his true home was his cabin on an island on a rural lake in Northern Ontario where he wrote books, developed syllabi, grew his cabin, and helped reestablish wildlife and reforestation. He relished telling stories of adventure and discussing philosophy with his friends during summer evenings, always with a Shephard at his feet. His infamous laugh will forever be heard by his friends across the lake. Ray's children, Christine Hale, Kenneth Hale, and Denise Kelleher, and their spouses David, Andrea, and Robert, will forever cherish his guidance and presence. His grandchildren, Britney, Samuel, David, Logan, and Thomas are his greatest legacy to whom he leaves the desire of knowledge and ambition to learn. Ray's memory will be honored privately, as requested, and he will be in peace at his island. The family asks that donations be made in Ray's memory to Freedom Service Dogs of America, the World Wildlife Fund, or other veteran's assistance or evironment protection organization. Arrangements for Ray are being held under the direction of Chapman Funerals & Cremations, Bridgewater. 508-697-4332
