Anne Shelley Obituary
Mrs. Anne Carter Shelley, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, passed away on December 31, 2016 at the age of 89. Anne Carter, the only child of Geraldine Fitzgerald Hagan and Edwin S. Hagan, was born on July 11, 1927 in Roanoke, Virginia. After her father's death, she and her mother lived in Christiansburg, Virginia, relocating to Danville, Virginia during the cold winters. She attended Averett College in Danville, Virginia before transferring to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.
After graduation, Anne Carter took education courses at The College of William and Mary where she met her husband, Adrian Donald Shelley, of Williamsburg, Virginia. They were married on January 3, 1949 and lived in Danville, Virginia before moving to Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1956. Anne Carter taught Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Math at Rock Hill High School and at Winthrop College in Rock Hill. She earned a Master's Degree in Guidance Counseling from Winthrop and taught Chemistry and Psychology at Catawba Academy in Rock Hill, also serving as the school guidance counselor. Always the academic, she then earned a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. She was a long-time member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church and the Rock Hill Country Club, and along with her husband, she was a member of a local bridge club for over 50 years. She was also actively involved for many years as a Volunteer Coordinator for Project Hope, a not-for-profit faith-founded Crisis Assistance Ministry that has provided Rock Hill citizens in crisis with basic needs since 1975.
Anne Carter had two great passions in life: her family and reading. She was a voracious reader who could easily finish one or more books every day in addition to consuming numerous magazines and newspapers. As a result, she was up-to-date on current affairs and could always discuss the latest best-seller. But most important to her was her family. She loved her husband who was her constant companion and whom she considered her best friend. In addition, she was extremely proud of her five children, calling them her greatest accomplishment in life, and of her five grandchildren.
Since her husband's death in 2012, Anne Carter has enjoyed living at Brookdale Ebenezer Road. Her family would like to thank Brookdale for the care and attention they provided to her.
Anne Carter was preceded in death by her daughter Anne Carter Frazer in 2008 and by her husband Adrian Shelley in 2012. She is survived by her children Adrian Jr. and wife Deborah, Jennifer, Jim and wife Regina, and Joe and by her grandchildren Lauren, Adrian III, Dianne, Gracie, and Haigen.
A memorial service will be held at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church at 11:00 on Friday, January 6, 2017. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Project Hope in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
