Calvin Morrow Obituary

ROCK HILL - Rev. Calvin Wesley Morrow, 84, of 2165 Ridgecrest Road, Rock Hill, S.C., peacefully entered Heaven on Sept. 10, 2010, at the Wayne T. Patrick House in Rock Hill.

He was born in Greenville, S.C., on April 10, 1926, to Thomas Pearson Morrow and Annie Josephine Capps Morrow and was one of five children. He was a graduate of Greenville's Parker High School, North Greenville College and attended Furman University. He was preceded in death by his help-meet and precious wife of 60 years, Frances Dickard Morrow. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Elmer Maurice Morrow.

He was a member and Pastor Emeritus of Calvary Baptist Church, Rock Hill. He was privileged to serve as a pastor of South Carolina churches for over 45 years, including Hilltop Avenue Baptist Church of Greenville, Calvary Baptist Church of Greer, Skull Shoals and Rehobeth Baptist Church of Gaffney, West Side Baptist Church of Chester and Calvary Baptist Church of Rock Hill. He completed his years of ministerial service at Roddey Baptist Church of Catawba.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving the United States Navy in the South Pacific. While in the service, he accepted Christ (as he loved to tell the story), "in a little Quonset Hut in Gulf Port Mississippi", and was later baptized at the Calvary Baptist Church in New York City.

He is survived by three children, David Morrow (Vivian) of Morristown, Tenn., Janie Hatchell (Randy) and Ann Clark (Wayne) of Rock Hill; six grandchildren, Amy Waddell, Charlie Morrow, Lori Howey, Wesley and Zachary Clark and Maryanne Najaka; nine great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Polly Johnson of Albany, N.Y., and Margaret Duncan of Greenville, S.C.; and a brother, Burnell Morrow of Atlanta, Ga. Last but not least he is also survived by the family's long-time caregiver, LaDone Black; and his dearest friend, Alton Booth.

The family wished to extend a lifetime of gratitude to the leadership and membership of Calvary Baptist Church of Rock Hill for their continual gracious love and support through the years and their diligence in taking precious care of Rev. Calvin Morrow and Frances. Calvary is home for our family and the very sweetest words for us to hear were "We love you Preacher...".

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12, at Calvary Baptist Church, 830 North Jones Ave., Rock Hill. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at Grand View Memorial Park, 401 Hollis Lakes Road, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, Rock Hill, SC or Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731.

To the Family of Calvin Morrow, My mom and dad started going to church and found Calvary Baptist Church to be their home because of Preacher Morrow. He helped bring our family to the Lord. I was a child when your family moved and remembering my dad being so broken hearted that you all had to move. I will always remember Preacher Morrow as the man who lead yet another family to God. Bless you all. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Morrow Family, I am sorry to hear of Preacher Morrow's passing, but glad to know he is face to face with his and my Lord and Savior! My husband and I were privileged to sit under Preacher Morrow's teaching for five years at Calvary Baptist Church. During those years, Preacher Morrow encouraged us tremendously and taught us to never give up "the good fight." I remember the time before I went into surgery at Piedmont Hospital and I was beginning to feel groggy from a shot I received. Right before I went to sleep, Preacher Morrow came in to pray with me. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I looked up and saw his glistening white hair and heard his voice. He was truly a wonderful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ! We are praying for the Morrow family. In Him, Jeff and Jennifer Mothersbaugh

I am so sorry to hear of Preacher Morrow's passing. I remember the family dearly from my early days growing up in Greenville. You all used to visit our family and drink coffee on Sunday afternoons. Preacher Morrow and my Father worked together for Jewel Tea before he finished school. My Father was Leo (L.G) Gilliam. I ran into Preacher Morrow and his wife several years ago when they were visiting Greenville. They were still very precious people. May God grant all of you peace at this time knowing that he is in heaven.

Preacher Morrow was so dear to us, especially during my husbands illness (Phil McAteer). No matter when I called him, he would come. Our family has many fond memories of him.
He will surely be missed by many but he is now with the Heavenly Father, no more pain, no more sorrow, he is now home.
