GAFFNEY - James Charles Phillips Sr., 84, formerly of 212 Oakwood Ave., York, S.C., died Jan. 17, 2011, at Peachtree Centre.
Born in Gaffney, he was married for 61 years to the late Mary Whitaker Phillips and was the son of the late Charles Clayton Phillips and Mary Etta Cousins Phillips. Mr. Phillips graduated from Gaffney High School where he played football. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in the South Pacific theater during World War II. Mr. Phillips was a member of the Masonic Lodge, was a salesman for Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Sunshine Biscuit and Western Auto, and was the owner of the Western Auto/True Value Hardware Store in York, S.C.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in York for 35 years, where he served as Deacon and Chairman, Sunday School teacher and served on numerous committees. He also served as Deacon and Chairman at former churches: Southside Baptist in Gaffney, S.C., and Magnolia Street Baptist in Greensboro, N.C.
Surviving are two sons, Jim Phillips and wife, Helen, of Gaffney and Todd Phillips and wife, Sarah, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; a sister, Carolyn Phillips Lemmons and husband, Dever, of Gaffney; six grandsons, Tony Parker of Las Vegas, Nev., Jamie Phillips of Brentwood, Tenn., Andrew Phillips, Stephen Phillips, Caleb Phillips and Joshua Phillips of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and two great-grandchildren, Samantha Phillips and J. P. Phillips of Brentwood, Tenn. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Maggie Kimbrell, Nellie Dowdle, Margie Clark and Lib Barnhill; and five brothers, Amos Phillips, Claude Phillips, Roy Phillips and Arthur Phillips, all of Gaffney and Richard (Andy) Phillips of Charlotte, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will immediately follow at 3 p.m. in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Trey Doyle, Pastor of First Baptist Church in York officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 236, York, SC 29745.
The family will be at the home of Jim & Helen Phillips, 408 Hackberry Drive, Gaffney.
