Barbara was born Sept. 25, 1949, in Jackson, Mich., to Howard and Norma (Tom) Robb. She graduated from Vandercook Lake High School in 1967.
On June 20, 1970, she married Edward Hempel Sr. in Jackson, Mich. Barbara was a secretary for Berrien Springs Public Schools for 25 years.
People who knew her describe Barb as kind, friendly, sweet and thoughtful. She found joy in locating just the right card for the occasion. Be it anniversary, sympathy, holiday or birthday, Barb sent cards to family and friends faithfully – and without fail, her cards arrived on time.
Barb was a self-confessed "cat lady," at one point having five cats to love. She enjoyed playing cards with friends in her euchre club and flower gardening. Her greatest joy of all was her family, whom she loved spending time with. There are no words to describe just how caring and compassionate she was, but anyone in her presence felt her warmth. She will be forever in our hearts, remembered daily and missed greatly.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Edward Hempel Sr.; children, Michelle (Kevin) Fuhst, Heather (Chad) Gast and Edward Hempel Jr.; grandchildren, Kevin Fuhst, Ellie Gast, Carson Gast and Aubrianna Gast; and siblings, Beverly Choate and Randy (Patricia) Robb. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents.

I love you so much Mom and I can´t wait to see you again. I never in my life thought that I would have a mother in-law who would love me and treat me just like her own son and you did that. And I never would have imagined that I would have a mother in-law that would love my son and treat him just like her own grandson. You are the best Mother In-Law that I could ever imagine and I love you so much. Shelly misses you so much and we all love you and miss you. Happy Easter mom and we´ll see you in a little bit. We´ll all be together again to eat corn on the deck again!!
