Edward "Ed" Curtis Smart, 89, of St. Joseph died at Caretel Inns on Sunday, Feb. 27, and was received into the arms of Jesus.
A graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery, 2925 Niles Road, St. Joseph, at noon on Saturday, March 5, with visitation at 11:30 a.m. in the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spectrum Health Lakeland Auxiliary.

Ed was born Dec. 28, 1932, to George and Marie (McKerrihan) Smart in Benton Harbor.
He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1951, the Junior College of Benton Harbor (LMC) in 1953 and received his B.A. from his beloved alma mater, the University of Michigan in 1955. Ed enjoyed a long career at Clarke Equipment in South Bend, Ind., from June 28, 1965, until his retirement as head accountant on July 1, 1995. Ed was a much-appreciated volunteer at Spectrum Health Lakeland Niles Hospital, where he was honored for his many years of dedicated service.
Ed was on the tennis team in high school and enjoyed golf as well. He was an avid traveler and went on many overseas tours in his lifetime. Ed was an ardent sports fan who loved watching the Detroit Tigers and Lions. Ed was a true blue U-M fan, who enjoyed sporting his maize and blue gear while watching every game! One of his greatest joys was to sit with his brothers: George, Richard and John Smart, and listen to big band records like Glenn Miller, to share their mutual love of music.
Ed is survived by his three sisters-in-law: Jean Smart of St. Joseph, Muriel Smart of Hamilton, Mich., and Gloria Smart, and nephew Richie Smart of Muskogee, Okla. Ed is also survived by his nieces and nephew: Stefani Smart of Douglas, Mich., Scott (Kathleen) Smart of St. Joseph, Jane (Randy) Klingenberg of Hamilton, Mich., and Janet (Tom) Smart of Jenison, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his brothers: George, John and Richard; and nephew, Tom Smart.
Although Ed did not have grandchildren, he dearly loved his nieces and nephews and their children: Nora, Savannah and Dylan Smart; Mitchell, Sadie, Elliott and Kendal Klingenberg; Tommy, Kayla (Brayden) and Boyd Smart.
