Olivia James, 75, of Benton Harbor, passed away peacefully on Sept. 19, 2025. A service celebrating her life will be Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Second Baptist Church, Benton Harbor. Olivia was born on March 24, 1950, in Marks, Miss. She was a proud student at Benton Harbor High School Class of 1968 and continued her education at Western Michigan University, where she earned both a bachelor of arts degree and a master of arts degree.
Throughout her career, Olivia worked tirelessly for Benton Harbor Area Schools, where she held various roles as an educator and administrator. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Olivia was an active member of the community.
Olivia's strength, wisdom and dedication to service were evident in every aspect of her life. She will be remembered as a woman who embodied sisterhood, leadership, and a lifelong dedication to service. Her mentorship, unwavering support and loving spirit left a lasting mark on all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Olivia's legacy lives on through her beloved husband, Benson James; children: Cynthia (Labarron) Johnson, Olivia (Kevin) Martin and Aaron James; grandchildren: Erica Smith, Daniel Blackburn, Taylor Smith, Jasmine (Michael) Dent and McKenzie James; great-grandchildren: Eric Smith, Sophia Blackburn and Elijah Blackburn; siblings: Ruby Patterson, Peggy Greer, Dorothy Grubbs, and Matthew Ellis Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
