Robert A. Freehling, 70, of Buchanan passed away on Aug. 25, 2025.
Born in St. Joseph on Feb. 25, 1955, to Andrew and Gerline (Tuesink) Freehling, Bob grew up with a strong work ethic, a straightforward nature and a deep loyalty to those he loved. A graduate of River Valley High School, Bob spent more than 30 years as an operating engineer with Local 324, where he was known for his reliability, grit and no-nonsense attitude. He believed in doing things right the first time and never shied away from hard work.
On Aug. 11, 1984, Bob married Karen Swartz in Buchanan. Together they built a life rooted in honesty, mutual respect, and quiet devotion. Karen preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 2019, and Bob carried her memory with him every day.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Karen Freehling.
He is survived by his son, TJ (Lillian) Freehling; his stepson, Matt (Paula) Pinkerton; and his special daughter, Lilly Shafer. He was a proud grandfather to Tiberius, Colin, Ashley and Jared, and a loyal companion to his beloved dog, Kate. A member of the NRA and a man of principle, Bob valued honesty above all. He said what he meant and meant what he said. He didn't dress things up, but he showed up – steadily, faithfully and without fanfare.
In keeping with Robert's wishes, cremation will take place, and no services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Buchanan Westerns Club, P.O. Box 99, Buchanan, MI 49107. Online condolences may be left for the family by visiting www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
