Roman Irwin Zehner, born in St. Joseph on July 26, 1938, passed away on Sept. 27, 2025.
The son of the late Roman D. Zehner and Margaret Base, Roman lived a life marked by resilience, athleticism and deep family ties. A proud graduate of Watervliet High School, Roman made his mark on the football field, earning All-Conference honors and the admiration of teammates and coaches alike. His passion for movement extended beyond the gridiron – he was a graceful roller skater, faithfully gliding across the rink every Saturday and an avid skier who embraced the thrill of the slopes with joy and vigor.
Roman's life was richly woven with family. He is survived by his former wives: Donna Kay Scott and Rose Zehner, and by his children, daughters: Darlene Dillenbeck, Debra Inde and Deanna (Don) Rolfe; adopted daughter, Krystal (Michael) Carpenter; sons: Roman W. (Sheila) Zehner and Roger (Paula) Zehner; and stepsons: Rick, Terry, Daniel and Ronald Garrett. His legacy continues through many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, each a testament to the enduring branches of his family tree.
He was preceded in death by his sisters: Margaret Sexton and Mary Weir, and his brother, Jerry Zehner – beloved siblings who now welcome him home.
Roman will be remembered for his spirited nature, his devotion to family and the way he embraced life's simple pleasures with enthusiasm. Whether carving down a snowy hill or dancing on wheels beneath the glow of a roller rink, he lived with motion, heart and purpose. His story lives on in the memories of those who knew him, loved him and carry his spirit forward.
