Carol Mangum Obituary

Carol Edwards Mangum

November 11, 1943 - January 26, 2019

Gibsonville

Carol Edwards Mangum lost her battle with cancer on Saturday, January 26, 2019. She is now with our Lord in Heaven, reunited with loved ones and no longer in pain. Carol had a wonderful life of 75 years, and in the end, was surrounded by family and friends at Duke Hospice's Hock Family Pavilion, where she passed peacefully. Carol was born in Newport News, VA and grew up in Gibsonville, NC. Carol was the daughter of the late Joseph Morton Edwards and Ellen Sears Edwards.

Carol has many survivors including her husband of 35 years, Harvey Leonard Mangum; her children, Wendy May Hall and husband Rodney Hall, Angie May, Lisa May, Missy May Wagoner and fiancé Steven Hunt, stepson Todd Mangum and wife Michelle Mangum, and stepson Chris Mangum; her grandchildren, Charlie Stephenson, William Mangum, Jessica Tavares, Brianna Wagoner, Luke Wagoner, and Carly Hall; and her sister Annette Edwards Waters. In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her brother Joe Edwards and her grandson Caleb Stephenson.

Carol had her Master's in Education and was a fifth-grade school teacher at Farmington Woods Elementary in Cary, NC. After she retired in 2004, she moved back to Gibsonville with Leonard to live in her childhood home. In addition to her family, Carol had so many special friendships. Carol has two very special groups of friends that she spends Holidays with and Travels with - a special group of friends in Gibsonville (The Springwood Crew) and a close group of retired teachers from Cary (The CCRs). Carol loved spending time with family and friends, traveling, cooking, reading, going to the movies, and she was an exceptional gardener.

There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Gibsonville United Methodist Church, 501 Church Street, Gibsonville, NC 27249 at 2:00 PM. The family would love to visit with family and friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:45 PM.

In lieu of flowers or food, please consider making a donation to the Duke Hospice Hock Family Pavilion in Carol's honor by going to the following link: https://dhch.duhs.duke.edu/make-donation - they took exceptional care of Carol and the family. Your donations would make a local, immediate impact. The family would like to send a warm and sincere thank you to everyone who visited, called, brought food, flowers, and supplies, and shared special memories of Carol during this very difficult time! "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matthew 5:4 NIV

My heart goes out to all the family. Carol was a GHS classmate, a fellow cheerleader, a church mate, but most of all a friend!
A beautiful person, inside and out. Carol, rest in peace and family, may you find peace also.

Carol worked out with me at Focus. She was always smiling and a joy to be around. A tough lady...worked her heart out in every class. She will be missed. My prayers are with her family.

I am so sorry to hear of Carol's passing. I taught with Carol at Farmington Woods Elementary in fifth grade and she was a mentor and dear friend who helped me become the teacher that I am today. The impact she made on her students was immeasurable and she was a master teacher. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time. She is an amazing woman who will be greatly missed.
