Catherine (Campbell) King

Buies Creek, North Carolina - Catherine (Campbell) King, 97, passed away at home on September 22, 2024. Catherine was born on June 27, 1927, in Harnett County, to the late Leslie Hartwell Campbell and Ora Green Campbell. Leslie Campbell was the second President of Campbell University. Catherine was the granddaughter of J.A. Campbell and Cornelia P. Campbell. J.A. Campbell was Founder of Campbell University. Also, preceding her in death was her husband, Robert (Bob) Lee King, Jr.; and her siblings, A. Hartwell Campbell, Betsy Campbell Dail, Ora Green Campbell Ellyson and James A. Campbell.
Bob and Catherine are survived by their daughters, Kathryn Campbell King (Maxie Gleaton) and Elizabeth (Beth) King Reed (Ramsey); grandsons, Ramsey Taylor Reed (Lindsey) and Robert Campbell Reed; and great-granddaughters, McKensie Campbell Reed and Emmy Elaine Reed. Step-grandsons, Robert G. Reed, David R. Reed, Eric M. Reed and Gregory S. Reed; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Catherine was the matriarch of the Campbell Family and loved the time she spent with them. She was an inspiration, mentor and example of what it means to live a Christian life.
Catherine received her associate's degree from Campbell College. She completed her bachelor's degree in Home Economics from Meredith College. She completed her formal education by earning her master's degree in home economics from the Woman's College in Greensboro (UNCG). After working with the N.C. Extension Service for several years, she taught at Ohio University and then returned to Campbell where she was a professor for over 35 years.
Catherine loved her students and loved teaching. She had a passion for housing and interior design. She enthusiastically shared her expertise in her classes. She particularly enjoyed supervising and teaching Home Economics students home management skills while they resided in the Home Management House, the former residence of Cornelia Pearson Campbell. Late in her career, Catherine joined Womble Realty and found joy in helping individuals find that perfect home.
As charter members of Memorial Baptist Church, Catherine and Bob devoted their lives to the church, Campbell University and the Buies Creek Community. Partnering together, they worked endless hours to support these institutions that they were passionate about and to whom they were committed. In addition, Catherine and Bob worked together to raise awareness, sponsorship of and funding for the Harnett County Historical Society Foundation, the organization responsible for the preservation of the J.A. Campbell House in Buies Creek.
Catherine had a special affinity for children and was a leader for Girls in Action (GA's) for many years. She also enjoyed teaching them important social skills such as sewing, cooking, crafts and community involvement. She was named Woman of the Year by the Lillington Business and Professional Women's Club; she served on the advisory board for the Harnett County Council of Women and the Cooperative Extension Agency. In addition, she was selected as one of the recipients of the Governor's Volunteer Service Award by former Governor Jim Hunt for her work with Campbell's international student population and other public service agencies.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Butler Chapel at Campbell University. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Memorial Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. A private burial will be held at Buies Creek Cemetery.
