Robert B. Herbert, Jr.

Raleigh, North Carolina - Robert Beverley Herbert, Jr., (February 5, 1943 - December 7, 2023) was born in Orange, NJ, the son of Robert Beverley Herbert and Beryl Tremper Hague Herbert. He graduated from the Chicago Harvard School before studying history at Princeton University (class of 1964), where he was a member of the Court Club and the Triangle Club. Those who knew him will remember his deep love and knowledge of history!

He married Jennette Hartshorn Campbell in 1965 and they lived in Charlottesville, VA, where he received his law degree from the University of Virginia and where their daughter, Deming was born. Bob and Jenny next lived in Bordentown, NJ, where he was in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Dix. His first job after his service would take them to Raleigh, NC, where he practiced law at First Title Insurance Company. Their second daughter, Carlyle, was born in Raleigh and baptized at Christ Episcopal Church, where Bob was active in teaching Sunday School and confirmation classes, serving as a member of the vestry, and reading the lessons during the service with a deep, booming voice. He was also known for joyfully belting out hymns, though not always in tune! In addition to his activities at Christ Church, Bob volunteered at St. Saviour's Center, the Christ Church outreach program, for many years. He was a founding member of Hospice of Wake County, now Transitions Hospice Care, where he was cared for with love and dignity in his final days.

Bob is survived by his partner of 32 years, Christopher Scott Lipe of Raleigh; his daughter, Catherine Deming Herbert (Dominic Wade) of Bristol, England; his grandchildren, William Gayle Dorroh IV, Charlotte Hartshorn Dorroh, and Campbell Wyss Dorroh, all of Savannah, GA; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sarah Carlyle Herbert Dorroh of Savannah. A Funeral Service and Burial will be held at Christ Church in Raleigh on Fri., Dec., 15, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Church, 120 E.
