Bennie Franklin (Ben) Sowell, age 82, of Sarasota, Florida, was born July 1, 1936 to Carlos H. Sowell and Pearl Dennis Sowell in Houston County, Alabama. He passed away peacefully December 15, 2018 at his home with his family after an illness.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Blitch Sowell, formerly of Homerville, Georgia, and their daughters Mary Elizabeth Kasper, of Sarasota, Florida, and Susan Marie Sowell, of Tallahassee, Florida, granddaughter Mary Grace Arents of Sarasota, Florida, nieces Jean S. Spencer (Jim) of Plano, Texas, and Ann Autry of Virginia, and nephew William C. Sowell of Birmingham, Alabama.
He received an undergraduate degree from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama and an MBA from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia.
He retired from Sears Roebuck and Company after 39 years, serving in different positions in several of the southeastern states. He was active in Rotary, Urban League, UMCA, and the Methodist Church.
His memorial service will be held in the Sarasota National Cemetery on January 25, 2019 at 2:00 PM with his nephew Jim Spencer officiating.
