Harold B. Fein, M.D., of Sarasota, died December 4, 2013 after a long illness. He was born August 12, 1924, to David and Mae Berkowitz Fein in the Bronx, NY. After completing two years at NYU, he was drafted in the Army to fight in WWII, trained in various states here, then was shipped overseas. In France and Germany he served as a medical technician in field hospitals, the forerunners of what would become MASH units. It was this experience which convinced him that he had to become a doctor.
Upon his return home he graduated from NYU and then Chicago Medical School. He interned at Jamaica Hospital and joined a family practice in NJ, opening his own practice in East Brunswick, NJ, in 1964, and retiring in 1992.
Harold was Chairman of Family Medicine and a member of the Board of Admissions of the New Jersey Medical School as well as head of family practice at both local hospitals. Shortly after moving to Sarasota, he volunteered at Senior Friendship's medical clinic for ten years before his own health declined.
He was a member of Palm-Aire CC, enjoying golf throughout most of his life as he did tennis, the Chicago Bears because of their having hired Jewish player Sid Luckman so many years ago, theater, dance, and politics.
Harold is survived by his wife Francesca, daughter Paula Ohler and her husband Robert of Chesapeake Beach, MD, his son Robert and his fiancee Leslie Goldberg of Blue Bell, PA, four grandchildren, his step-son Louis Decarolis and his wife Amy Becker of Helmetta, NJ, his sister-in-law Margit Fein of Innsbruck, Austria, and several cousins. He is also missed by his dog Colm. He is predeceased by his parents and his younger brother, Sheldon.
A private service will be held at the National Veterans' Cemetery in Sarasota on Monday, December 16th. A Celebration of Harold's Life will be held for family and friends that afternoon at 12:30 pm at Palm-Aire Country Club.
