Hazel Powers Obituary

Powers, Hazel A.
Aug. 12, 2010

Hazel A. Powers, 80, of Venice, died Aug. 12, 2010.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 3 at the Epiphany Cathedral in Venice.
Survivors include her sons, Michael of Rochester Hills, Mich., John of White Plains, N.Y., Patrick of Chicago and James of Wilmette, Ill.; daughters Catherine Deroche of Barrington, Ill., and Margaret Maloney of Wilmette; and 16 grandchildren.
Hazel was born in Cleveland to Michael and Catherine Lowry of Ireland. During her lifetime Hazel lived in several cities and states, including Cleveland, Milwaukee, Chicago, Rivervale, N.J., and Cincinnati, and then to Barrington, Ill.
Hazel was a strong, independent woman with an abundance of character. Her great sense of humor and free spirit left all who knew her better because they had. Her limitless ability to show great love and affection to others provided her the tools to successfully raise all six of her children to be the valuable members of society that they are today.
Hazel was resilient, strong willed and the grounding force for her young family as she supported her husband of 63 years, Jack, through many moves during his successful career as a sales executive. Hazel was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a good friend to many during all phases of her life.
During her time here, Hazel was always contributing to some cause or need. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Reading Grandma; contributed generously to the building funds of two churches; and was a member of garden clubs, bridge clubs, and Bible studies in all the locations she lived.
Hazel retired to Venice in 1990 to spend time by the sea, which she loved so.
