James "Jim" Appledorn, 74, Sarasota, died July 5, 2007.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Palms Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Mary; a son, J. Scott of Sarasota; daughters Kevin Younger of Myakka City and Brenda of Winter Haven; and a brother, Donald of Lakewood Ranch.
Jim was born in Huntington, W.Va. He graduated from Holy Family High School in Ashland, Ky., and received his bachelor's degree from Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla., where he was a member of the baseball team and Pi Kappa Phi.
Jim held positions with Pan American World Airways, Harris Corp., EMR Telemetry and Crews Construction before starting Jim Appledorn, Inc., General Contractor, specializing in custom built homes primarily in Palm Aire Country Club. He "retired" to open a home inspection company.
As part of his many endeavors, Jim and his brother Don, owned and raced thoroughbred horses. Jim was a golfer, an inventor, and a published author.
Jim attended Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to TideWell Hospice, Moffitt Cancer Center, or the charity of your choice.

I can´t believe it´s been 16 years since your passing. I have such wonderful memories from the times spent in the Appledorn home. One memory stands out a bet if I could teach Brenda to swim you´d put in a pool. I won or should I say Brenda won the bet . When I reflect on the past years I find it hard believe that the Ryans have known the Appledorns for over 19 years what memories we share hard to pinpoint one but be sure that we have fond memories and will miss Jim and his dry sense of humor- so glad we saw all of you in June. Dear Mary and Brenda, My thoughts and prayers are with you. Not being an eloquent apeaker, I would just like to share these thoughts and words with you. Jim and I first met 34 years ago when he was starting his own contracting business and I was making mortgages for a S&L. Over the years we noticed that our views were so much alike, we could have been twins. We shared golf trips and fishing trips and even a business venture or two over the years. I am thankful of the fact that I shared his final round of golf with him less than 3 weeks ago. Although he was very frail and weak, he was still the same competitor he always was, and as upbeat as anyone could be, under these conditions. I am proud to be able to call him my best friend and I will truly miss him. Rest in peace my dear friend.

My sympathy in the loss of Jim. He was such a high spirited man, a gentle soul. He worked for me at Atlas Insurance, taking pictures and doing home inspections for three years. Dear Mary: I am so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I know he had been sick for a long time and now his battle is over and he can rest. He was a good friend to David and now they can play some "real golf" together and enjoy each moment without pain. I know David was waiting to greet him!
