John F. "Jack" McDevitt, 86, Longboat Key, formerly of Springfield, Pa., died Dec. 23, 2007.
Mr. McDevitt grew up in Yeadon, Pa., and graduated from Yeadon High School. During World War II, he joined the Army Air Corps, serving in the states as an aircraft engineer.
After the war, he studied mechanical engineering at Drexel University. Upon graduation, he joined the Philadelphia Electric Company, where he worked until retirement. During his 38 years at PECO, Mr. McDevitt was Superintendent of the Philadelphia Electric Co.'s General Meter shop. He traveled extensively as representative to the American Gas Association distribution metering committee, serving as its chairman in 1972.
In retirement, Mr. McDevitt and his wife of 55 years, Barbara, lived in Longboat Key, Fla., returning to Pennsylvania for the summers. An avid golfer of 72 years, Mr. McDevitt was a member of the Longboat Key Club, as well as Rolling Green Country Club in Pennsylvania, so that he and his wife could play golf year-round.
In 1954, the McDevitts became parishioners of St. Dorothy's Catholic Church in Drexel Hill, Pa. While in Florida, they were active members of St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by sons John Paul of New Jersey and Robert of Pennsylvania; daughter Susan Ward of Virginia; and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his two sisters, Mary Butler and Virginia McLaughlin.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate his life at a Memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Longboat Key.
