Marc Weinberg Obituary

Weinberg, M.D., Marc Lewis
Oct. 12, 1953 - Sep. 12, 2015
Marc Lewis Weinberg, M.D., died in Sarasota, FL on Saturday, September 12. 2015. Marc Weinberg was a family physician for 31 years, first in Montclair, NJ and, after moving to Sarasota, FL, as a solo practitioner and then for 21 years at Intercoastal Medical Group. He had a particular interest in patient-centered holistic and functional medicine. He was Clinical Assistant Professor at Florida State University College of Medicine and the Medical Director of Plymouth Harbor Smith Care Center. When not practicing medicine, he was an avid bicyclist, foodie, traveler, and lover of life. His wit was as mischievous as it was irrepressible; having fun was a very serious matter.
Marc Weinberg was born October 12, 1953 in Newark, NJ and grew up in South Orange, NJ. He met his future wife, Ruth Folit, at New College of Sarasota, from which he graduated in 1974; he and Ruth married there in 1979. He earned his M.D. from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1981, and completed a residency in Family Medicine at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, NJ. He is survived by his wife Ruth, son Ben, daughter Sara, son-in-law Jeremy Katzen, grandson Isaiah, brothers Neil and Kenneth, and mother Renée. He was the youngest son of the late C. Richard Weinberg.
The Memorial Service will be on Saturday, September 19, at 6:30 pm at the New College Bayfront. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Marc Weinberg Holistic Medicine Scholarship Fund. Send to Florida State University College of Medicine at 201 Cocoanut Avenue, Sarasota 34236, Attention: Dr. Marc Weinberg Scholarship Fund.

To Dr. Marc´s family, I will never forget Marc´s great talents as a healer. Beginning with his solo practice, he not only looked after my physical well being but also was an empathetic and caring psychological professional-I went to him in crisis and his guidance resulted in my amazing life today. I could never find the right words to express my gratitude and immense respect.

I worked with Marc in the mid 80s at a walk in clinic in Bradenton, Medi-Quik, right after he graduated med school and moved to Florida. Great person to spend downtime with between patients. He introduced me to great Chinese cuisine. He and his wife had a cool house close to Indian Rocks Beach. Sad to see he passed, he was a great guy.

Dear family of Marc´s, I have so much gratitude for all that he Marc did for me as my doctor in Sarasota. He was my doctor long enough that he cracked jokes, etc and he was just so funny. Moreover, he was one of the most important people in my life then, and still. Please know that I hold all in my heart and I will never forget his amazing self.

Although it has been many years ago, Marc brought me through some very difficult health situations. I’m so very sorry for his loss. He was such a professional doc with a wickedly good sense of humor. Marc also took great care of my mother, even when she didn’t care for herself.

I just discovered this unbelievably awful news about Marc’s passing. I was getting ready to go back to Sarasota. I wanted to look him up and to my sorrow, found instead his obituary. My belated thoughts are with his family. He loved them so dearly.

I am completely shocked to hear of Marc's passing, just now on Oct 4 2017. We are in the Sarasota area all of next week on business, and I was hoping to contact him for a long overdue get together.

I knew and spent lots of time with Marc and Ken while we were med students in Guadalajara. They meant a lot to me during a trying time in my life.

Ken, I'll try contacting you. My condolences to you and Ruth. I'm so sorry to read about this. Life isn't fair.

Dear Dr.Weinberg,
I really miss you and truly enjoyed "doing rounds" with you on your weekly visits to see residents on Smith Care Center at Plymouth Harbor. Your wit and intelligence always reminded me of TV's "Dr.House. " I will cherish my memories of you always.

May I express my deepest sympathies at the passing of Marc. I was his supervising resident when he went through family medicine residency training at the Mountainside Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. I remember with fondness the days when we worked closely together on our pediatric rotation. Both he and I were "just youngsters" then. Time goes on so very quickly! I am glad that Marc was a wonderful physician and so beloved by his patients, family and friends!

To the Weinberg Family, we are so sorry for your loss. We knew he retired, but had no idea he had passed. Our entire family saw him for years at the Beneva office, and we looked forward to seeing him a few times per year. He sometimes talked to us more about topics other than our current health, and we enjoyed our visits. He was always very kind and very interesting. We wish your family peace and love.

I am at a lost for words. My heart truly aches as this world will not be the same without him. He was not only a doctor; he was like a father figure and counselor. He trusted my instincts which allowed me to fully trust him as a doctor/healer. And he welcomed my holistic view of medicine. His advice and talks will be missed. A brilliant, kindhearted and beautiful being he was. He will be truly missed. Condolences to the family. I can only imagine how amazing he was as a father and husband.

Growing up with Marc, shoveling snow, stick ball in the dead end, all the time spent together long ago. A great guy, with a big heart, obviously made a positive impact to all he touched physically and emotionally. Although I lost contact, memories of Marc will always bring a smile to my face. My heartfelt condolences to Ruth, his children and family; including Kenny, Neil and Renee. Sorry to be so late with this, just learned today. Love and best to all,

Words cannot express my utter sadness at this news. They also cannot express the appreciation, fondness, awe and gratitude I felt towards this man. He was more than a doctor, he was a friend, a co-conspirator through the travails of life, a giver of hope. I am terribly sorry to only learn of it now, as I would have been at this service in a heartbeat. He will live forever in my heart and his humor will continue to make me smile, even during the worst of times. (Like only he was capable of doing!) To his family I offer my deepest sympathies and love ... thank you, thank you for bringing this unique soul into our world. He truly changed my life for the better and I will always be indebted.

Dr. Weinberg, a man of integrity and kindness, you will be dearly missed. As a healer and our physician, you took the time to listen and care for us for over 20 years. We respected your advice and appreciated your patience and excellent care. But even more important than all you did for us, the love you had for your wife was clearly present. The pride you had as a father and grandfather was so evident. It was a gift to hear you speak about your beautiful family. It was an honor knowing you. May peace come to your family through the loving memories you have given to so many of us. Our deepest sympathies surround you.

Dr. Weinberg was our family doctor for about 10 years. His kids went to Pine View with mine, and we often talked about them when I saw him as a patient. My heart is heavy at the thought of doctor Weinberg's passing. Having been a patient of his over the last 15 years, I will surely miss him.The words expressed at the beautiful Celebration of life were felt by many not only those who spoke them. I found myself nodding in agreementAt the adjectives used to describe him. He was truly one of a kind.I look forward to my office visits with him. When with him you had his undivided attention. So caring, so compassionate and a wonderful listener. I don't know that I'll ever find another physician quite like him. Be gentle and peaceful in the spirit world Dr. Weinberg just as you were in this life. A tremendous loss to the medical community, family and friends. So grateful to have known him. God Bless the Weinberg family.

Oh what a treasure of a human being. I was his first nurse when he started his solo practice. He taught me so much in the 5 years I was with him. He became my personal MD for over 20 yrs. It was always fun on my visit we would reminece over old times and laugh alot. I will miss him dearly, God sure does take the best ones first and he will be their star angel. We should all learn from his kind and caring ways. I know how much he loved Ruth and his children and his beautiful grandson, he was so proud of all of them. May god give you strength in the coming days.

During one of my annual physicals with Dr. Weinberg he inquired about my exercise habits. I mentioned that I bicycled. He asked if I wore a helmet. I said not in my neighborhood. He said oh, the streets in your neighborhood are softer than the streets in other neighborhoods? I have worn a helmet ever since. During another visit I noticed he no llonger had a ponytail. I asked if that meant he was no longer radical? He said no I still am I just get away with it more now because people aren't expecting it. God only knows why he took him away from all of us. But I am very grateful to have known and been cared for by him. He was a very special person.

I am deeply saddened by Dr. Weinberg's passing. He entered our lives right before our first (of three) child was born and I was elated to have a doctor that wanted a partnership with regard to our health. He encouraged us to take responsibility for our own health and he was there as a sounding board and advisor for both alternative and traditional healing methods. But his greatest gift to me was when he urged me to consider becoming a stay at home mom if it was feasible. My life path changed in that moment. Needless to say, I eventually did and I will never ever regret that choice. Thank you for your honesty, humor and untraditional methods, even before they were accepted. There is no other like you. You will be missed in this community. Love and light to your dear family.

Very sorry to hear about Dr. Weinberg's passing. He was a good man, and a very compassionate soul. I met him when he was the on-campus physician at New College in the 1990's, when I was a student. Later he was my doctor, and helped me through some difficult medical issues. I always found his sardonic wit to be a refreshing antidote to the impersonal clinical approach. He has been and will continue to be the standard that I hold other physicians to. Best wishes to his family and friends- he was a special man and will be missed.

For several decades my wife and I both went to Dr. Weinberg. His gentle caring ways inspired me to write the following -

The Doctor - Give Them Pause

You tell them things you wouldn't tell
Your buddy or your wife,
From ills that only pester
To those that threaten your life.

So, when the door closes behind them
And they take their chair,
You'll have to give a moment
And forgive their vacant stare.

They may have just caused a toddler
To swallow a horse sized pill,
Or explained to a frightened couple that,
Yes, your child is ill.

They may have counseled a pregnant teen
And given solace to her dad,
Or reminded an aging sports star
He doesn't have what he once had.

They check your file and turn toward you
As you knew they would,
So give them pause, listen close
And hope the news is good.

Dedicated to all of my Doctors from Wyman to Weinberg

Marc was a very special man in all the ways that matter and make up a great person and life that went with it. An acute loss to all that knew him and loved him with an extra hug to Ruth and the entire Weinberg family.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Weinberg.s passing. I have moved away from the area many years ago but he was always my favorite physician. He was honest, humble and knowledgeable. I remember I had a visit with him on 9/11 and he told me all he wanted to do was go home and hug his children and wife. He just wanted to be with his family. During visits he always spoke to me of his family, interests and was authentic. Very relational with me. I'm not sure if he was that way with everyone but I assume he was. He took care of my mother as she was dying and I always remember how honest he was with our family. There was a point before she died and he told us he didn't feel comfortable continuing care for her because it was beyond his expertise. How many people would admit that? Outstanding character and if a mistake was made he would own up to it. He set the standard for me and what I look for in medical care. Heaven got a special angel. Love to his family.
