Morris Kolodney Obituary

Kolodney, Morris
Sept. 24, 1911 - Nov. 29, 2009

Morris Kolodney, Ph.D., 98, of Sarasota, formerly of River Edge, N.J., died Nov. 29, 2009.
Interment will be at the Jewish Center of Venice. Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Dr. Kolodney was the professor emeritus of chemical engineering at the College of the City of New York (C.C.N.Y.). During World War II, he was one of the original scientists at the Los Alamos Laboratory (Manhattan Project), where he produced the first plutonium used in making the first atomic bombs and where he witnessed the first atomic explosion.
Among many patents, Dr. Kolodney developed electromanganese, now in extensive use in U.S. dollar coins. After returning to C.C.N.Y. in 1946, he taught chemical engineering and metallurgy and was a consultant on many nuclear power projects for Los Alamos, the Air Force, General Electric and United Nuclear.
Dr. Kolodney was the recipient of the prestigious Townsend Harris Medal and the Alumni Service Award. He retired from C.C.N.Y. in 1973 after teaching for 37 years and moved to the Sarasota area in 1978, where he established the Florida chapter of the C.C.N.Y. Alumni Association and served as its president for more than 10 years.
Dr. Kolodney is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Edith; his son, Steve, and wife, Deidre; his daughter, Elizabeth and Barbara Sutton, whom he always considered part of the family.

I was a student of Prof. Kolodney at CCNY. Reconnected with him a few years ago, and still have my cherished, handwritten reply to my note. Attaching photo of a "young" Kolodney at an A.I.Ch.E. event circa 1963.

Prof. Kolodney taught metalurgy to me at CCNY in 1970. I remember him with fondness and respect. I will never forget the few times I rode the NYC bus with him, which I boarded at Amsterdam Ave. and 161 street on my way to school. He always gave me sound and kind advice on those ocasions.

I was honored to meet Morris in person earlier this year, after having known him by phone for several years. I will always treasure our meeting, and remember fondly his captivating way of telling a story, his energetic spirit, his sense of humor and his magical way of connecting with people. He was a very special and important person who will be greatly missed.
