Nancy Logan Obituary
Logan, Nancy G.
Nov. 22, 1926 - Feb. 20, 2016
Nancy Logan, 89, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on February 20, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was born Nancy Russell Garrett in 1926 to Fred M. and Nancy S. Garrett in Atlanta and moved with her family to Louisville, Kentucky two years later. Her zest for life was palpable. When recalling her early days as a pilot, she said, 'I was pretty good at takeoffs and landings, but my spins were spectacular.' While preparing to take a helicopter tour of Hawaii a few years ago, when asked whether she wanted the doors on or off, she didn't hesitate to respond 'Doors off!' She always wanted to be part of the action. She graduated from Stephens College for Women in 1946 and earned her pilot's license there. In 1948, she graduated from University of California with a degree in history and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. In the fall semester of 1948, she began her master's degree in history at University of Hawaii, 11 years before statehood. In spring 1950, she married Fred W. Logan of Louisville. Later that year, they moved to Siesta Key, where they created a vibrant life together. Her great loves were family, friends, travel and yoga. She traveled widely with her husband, her family and a group of friends who called themselves the 'Eurobelles'. Destinations included scuba diving trips throughout the Caribbean, the famous sailboat race from St. Petersburg to Havana prior to Castro, Europe and China in the early 1980s just after travel was allowed. On family vacations in recent years, she went glider riding above her beloved Grand Teton National Park, bear watching in Yellowstone National Park, cable car riding in San Francisco, and helicopter touring in Hawaii, revisiting fond memories. A lifelong athlete, she won many medals competing with the Sarasota Masters Swim Club and played tennis until her late 70s. She was an early adopter of yoga, starting in 1975, and practicing until her last yoga retreat in November 2014 with her daughter Rusty. Rusty was the oldest participant of that retreat, except for Nancy. She loved having lunch or dinner with family and friends, and was fond of champagne. She enjoyed her book clubs, bridge groups and her new Bay Village community, but for too short of a time. She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Fred Logan. She leaves behind a sister, Zanah Stotz, of Florence, Oregon and a brother, Fred M. 'Gary' Garrett, Jr. of Louisville, Kentucky; two daughters, Nancy 'Rusty' Logan (Billy Foster) of Durango, Colorado and Cathy Logan-Pearce (Jim) of Seattle, Washington; a son, Whit Logan (Colleen) of Park City, Utah; and two granddaughters, Sierra and Lani Foster of Durango. Her children wish to thank her for instilling in them lifelong loves of travel, yoga and enjoying life. The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to all the medical personnel who gave their utmost and delivered capable, compassionate care to Nancy. The family also wishes to thank the staffs at Take Care and Tidewell Hospice House. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Foundation earmarked for the Trauma Center, Tidewell Hospice House or SPARCC.
